The Iowa State women’s basketball team beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 84-67 on Sunday afternoon, despite not having Kelsey Bolte and Anna Prins available. The starting line up for the Cyclones was quite a sight on Sunday. Alison Lacey, Denae Stuckey, Chassidy Cole, Shellie Mosman, and Chelsea Poppens. Mosman made the most of her opportunity and scored 14 points with five assists and two turnovers.
– Bolte was available if needed and should be back in time for the Iowa game. She has been struggling with an Achilles injury.
– Prins will most likely be out all week due to a virus.
– Iowa State was 17-for-35 from 3-point range in the game. That is the largest number of 3-pointers that the team has hit this year.
-Allison Lacey continues to show why she is the leader of this team. Lacey had 27 points, six rebounds, eight assists and once again only one turnover in 38 minutes of play. She still leads the Big 12 in assists to turnover margin.
– Iowa State’s post players were 5-of-14 on the day.
– The Cyclones turned the ball over 16 times but still managed to have 22 assists. That’s compared to Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s 17 turnovers and 13 assists.
-Iowa State barely won the rebounding battle 37-36.
Moore’s Take
I am sad to say I could not make this game due to drill, but from the sounds of things it was an up and down contest for the team. Iowa State’s post players really need to step it up, and fast. Lacey can’t carry the team forever. But how about Shellie Mosman? She started her first game of her career and scored 14 points in 25 minutes of action. You have to love to see that. Also, Whitney Williams continues to have a solid sophomore year and has showed she is not afraid to make big plays. The way I see things, even if its just one of the four post players that starts making big plays, this team will be fine. But if none of them start being more productive, this could be a long season. Iowa State plays at home against Iowa on Thursday.
