By Chris Moore, CycloneFanatic.com WBB Bloger It has been a wild week in the Big 12 as far as women’s basketball goes. Here is my weekly team-by-team breakdown for all of you Fanatics.
Iowa State (16-3)(4-2)- What a week for the Iowa State Cyclones! The 18th ranked Cyclones knocked off 25th ranked Texas in an overtime thriller and played outstanding defense against 12th ranked Oklahoma in a grind it out game to go 2-0 this week. Amanda Zimmerman was named newcomer of the week for the first time this season, after a strong performance against Texas when she scored a career high 14 points and pulled down five boards. The Cyclones now find themselves tied for third in the conference. Iowa State will look to keep its four game winning streak going when they travel to Kansas State on Sunday.
Kansas State (10-9)(2-3)- The Wildcats are on a three game losing streak as they dropped one against Colorado by six. They then ran into Nebraska and lost by 15. During the Colorado game, Kansas State could not get the ball in the bucket as they went 28 percent from the field, but free throws kept them close. The Nebraska game looked as though it was going to be a blow out from the start, but the Wildcats cut a 22-point deficit to only four just before the break. Nebraska was ultimately too much to handle. Next up is 18th ranked Iowa State.
Kansas (12-7)(2-4)- Kansas lost a tough game on the road to Oklahoma but bounced back nicely against Colorado over the past week. Kansas took control of the Oklahoma game in the early by going up 16-6. The Sooners then went on a 22-2 run and never looked back. Against Colorado, Danielle McCray and Carolyn Davis had double-doubles and this game never really was in doubt. The Jayhawks will look to continue to win when they go against Missouri tomorrow.
Nebraska (18-0)(5-0)- I am starting to wonder if this Nebraska team is even human. The fourth-ranked Huskers are on a roll and I am not sure if they can be touched. Nebraska not only beat Kansas State, but they beat them by a convincing 15 points in front of a record crowd of 13,303. Kelsey Griffin, Yvonne Turner, Cory Montgomery, and Dominique Kelly all scored in double figures. Nebraska then had a scrimmage of sorts against Texas Tech, beating the Raiders 89-47. Next up is a road trip to Colorado tomorrow.
Colorado (12-7)(2-4)- Colorado struggled this week by going 0-2. Against Oklahoma State, the Buffaloes were very much so into the game until they went with out a field goal in 10 and half minutes of play. Against Kansas, Colorado was out of sync all game long and never could get going. Colorado will look to get their shooting touch back when they face fourth-ranked Nebraska on Saturday.
Missouri (11-8)(1-5)- Missouri did what? Some how, some way, the Tigers were able to shock Baylor, 70-62. The Tigers had four players in double digits in scoring and forced Baylor to shoot from the outside and only allowed Griner to score 14 points. But the Tigers were brought back down to earth when they faced Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls took the lead half way through the first half and never looked back. Next up for the Tigers is rival Kansas tomorrow.
Oklahoma (14-5)(4-2)- The 12th ranked Sooners beat down Kansas and gave Coach Coale her 300th victory, but the celebration wouldn’t last long as the trip to Ames did not go so well. Suffocating defense and foul trouble hurt the Sooners all game and Iowa State took advantage. Oklahoma only scored 56 points, which is 19 below their average. The Sooners will look to bounce back on tomorrow as they will travel to Texas Tech.
Oklahoma State (17-3)(5-1)- The 17th ranked Cowgirls went 2-0 this week by beating up on Colorado and Missouri. The Colorado game was a dogfight until mid way through the second half. That’s when Colorado went on a drought and Oklahoma State put the Buffaloes away for good. The Missouri game was never really in doubt as Riley put on a show scoring 29 points. Next up is a trip to eighth-ranked Texas A&M on Sunday.
Texas (13-6)(2-3)- The 25th ranked Longhorns took a step back this week by losing a heart breaker to Iowa State in overtime. Texas was up 14 points midway through the second half. Iowa State eventually chipped away to the end, when the Cyclones managed two offensive boards and a clutch three by Alison Lacey to send it into overtime. Texas will look to pull off an upset when they face 16th ranked Baylor on Sunday.
Texas A&M (15-3)(3-2)- The eighth-ranked Aggies beat up on Texas Tech behind an outstanding performance from the Big 12 player of week Danielle Adams this past week. Adams had 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks to complete the triple-double. The Aggies then had to travel to Baylor a few days later where the Lady Bears would show that they are still an elite team in the Big 12. The Aggies will look to get back to their winning ways when they face 17th ranked Oklahoma State on Sunday.
Texas Tech (13-6)(1-4)- After just falling short to Texas, the Lady Raiders have looked awful. In their defense, they did play two top 10 teams. Texas Tech lost 69-54 against Texas A&M then just got embarrassed by Nebraska losing 89-47. Texas Tech will look to at least keep it close when they face 12th ranked Oklahoma on Saturday.
Baylor (15-4)(2-3)- The 16th ranked Bears were completely caught off guard this week losing to Missouri. Brittney Griner only played 21 minutes due to foul trouble and Baylor struggled with out her. But the Lady Bears bounced back in a huge way by beating 8th ranked Texas A&M, 61-53. Baylor was sparked by Melissa Jones, who had missed the previous four games with a leg injury. She scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Britney Griner had 20 points and five blocks. Next up for the Lady Bears is a trip to 25th ranked Texas.
