It wouldn’t be spring without rumors of Fred Hoiberg and the NBA heating up. You didn’t actually think that a new contract at Iowa State would eliminate the chatter this time around, did you?
Of course, Rick Adelman, head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, announced his retirement earlier today. At the snap of a finger, Hoiberg and Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo (a guy who I have heard has interest in this job for months now) were immediately linked with the opening. (I’ll go on the record again right now and state that I don’t believe Hoiberg will take this job.) But the mentions are out there.
Here’s one written by ESPN’s Marc Stein, as an example. And for what its worth, Billy Donovan’s name is now being tossed around too.
From an Iowa State perspective, there is no news here. For months, it has been well documented that the Minnesota job was going to come open. For months, Hoiberg (along with Izzo) has been mentioned with the job. Hoiberg’s latest contract ultimately won’t keep him from heading to the NBA, but I also don’t know think that Fred would have signed it knowing that he was going to leave in a couple of weeks.
Think about it, Hoiberg and Timberwolves head honcho Flip Saunders are friends. AGAIN, WE ALL KNEW THIS WAS COMING. Do you actually think that Hoiberg and Saunders (who was seen in Ames numerous times during the season) haven’t talked about this already? Come on. Let’s use some common sense people. None of it adds up and I just don’t see it happening. Not right now. Plus, Hoiberg certainly isn’t recruiting like a coach on his way out.
My take? Just relax everybody.
