Jakolby Long is approaching his search for a college program a little differently than most. That’s because Long, a three-star shooting guard (class of 2016) out of Oklahoma who visited Iowa State this weekend, is the son of a coach – his high school coach to be exact.
“All of the time, we watch plays together,” Long told CycloneFanatic.com after his visit to Iowa State on Sunday night. “We pick apart every little thing that you can think of.”
Now, it is time to pick apart that official visit to Iowa State. And the verdict is?
“He (Long’s father) really likes how Coach (Steve) Prohm reacts in practice when the players mess up,” Long said. “He works with them, shows them how to do it and doesn’t cuss or anything like that. To be honest, they are both chill kind of guys.”
Long, another T.J. Otzelberger recruit, went on to call Prohm a “player’s coach.”
“We have a really good relationship going on right now,” Long said. “He really just told me that he wants me to play my game. I can play the one or two. It really doesn’t matter to him. He just wants me on the court so I can benefit the team.”
Long’s decision will come down to Iowa State, Texas, Georgia and Utah and it could happen sometime this week. Right now, his game plan is to meet with his family to discuss a possible commitment. As of now, no other official visits have been scheduled.
“I need to talk to my parents still,” Long said. “I’m going to talk with them this week to talk about my visit. I really liked it. We will go from there.”

— He came away impressed with Iowa State’s facilities, saying that he appreciated how the Sukup Practice Facility was open 24-hours a day.
— The most impressive quality of this 6-foot-4, 200-pound combo is the fact that he takes pride in defense.
“I can defend anyone in the nation,” Long said.
