According to the conversation on our message board, Cyclone fans appear to be obsessed with Iowa State’s recruitment of 2014 hoops prospect Rashad Vaughn. That’s understandable. After all, Iowa State is without question one of the front-runners to land one of the top players in the country.
Vaughn, who Rivals.com ranks as the seventh best recruit in the class of 2014, would without question be the biggest get in the history of Iowa State basketball. He will officially visit Iowa State on Nov. 17.
But at what point has Iowa State has done all it can do with Vaughn? The Cyclones have clearly been "all-in" on him since day one.
Obviously, Iowa State’s recruiting efforts so far with him have been superb, otherwise Vaughn wouldn’t be taking an official to Ames, a town where he’s been on a handful of unofficials over the last year or so.
Here’s why Iowa State’s recruiting efforts of 2014 small forward Josh Cunningham might be just as, if not more important than Vaughn’s over the next couple of months.
So far, point guard Clayton Custer (Overland Park, Kan.) is Iowa State’s only commit in the 2014 class.
Often times, players like Vaughn want to see who they wiill be playing with before choosing a school. Chances are, Vaughn and Cunningham know each other. Chances are, Vaughn wants to see whom else Iowa State (and every other school in the running for that matter) will add to that 2014 class before making a decision.
Iowa State’s work with Vaughn is far from done but to me, adding a player like Cunningham would exponentially increase Fred Hoiberg’s chances of signing Vaughn in the long run.
Cunningham is expected to officially visit Iowa State on Oct. 26. He will take visits to Creighton, Oklahoma and Minnesota before that date.
