Here’s a look at what’s gone down over the last week in Big 12 women’s basketball.
Big 12 Players of The Week:
Player: Alison Lacey, Iowa State Newcomer: Brittney Griner, Baylor
Iowa State (7-1) – Iowa State had a great week by beating two Big Ten teams. Alison Lacey was named player of the week for the third time in her career. That was after recording just the second triple-double in school history against Iowa last Thursday. The Cyclones also beat Minnesota on Sunday. Iowa State won’t play again until Sunday, Dec. 20, when Northern Iowa will come to town.
Kansas State (4-5) – The Wildcats felt heartbreak in their only game last week by losing to Northwestern 53-50. Kansas State turned the ball over twice while trailing by two with under a minute to go. This was still an impressive performance by the Wildcats. We will find out a lot more when they travel to the Duel in the Desert tournament. They will face Hawaii on Dec. 19 and then will have a chance to play either UNLV or VCU.
Kansas (7-2) – The 22nd ranked Jayhawks took care of business this week by beating UMKC and Creighton. The story of the week for the Jayhawks was freshmen guard Angel Goodrich. She had a career high 20-points and eight assists in their win against Creighton. The Jayhawks will next face U.C. Riverside on Dec. 20.
Nebraska (10-0) – The Cornhuskers are off to their best start in school history as they moved on to 10-0 with wins over Creighton and Northern Illinois. But the 20th ranked Huskers will be tested on Dec. 20 when they will face fifth ranked LSU. If Nebraska pulls off that upset, look out. Colorado (6-2)- When you shoot badly, you normally lose. That’s what Colorado did recently while shooting 30 percent from the field in a loss against Colorado State. Colorado has lost seven straight road games. It will be interesting to see how this team responds, as they will have six straight home games starting with Southern Utah on Dec. 19.
Missouri (6-2) – The Tigers went 2-0 this week but that is not what has gotten the attention of the nation. Amanda Hanneman and Jessra Johnson, the Tigers leading scorers, got arrested after beating Texas-Pan America. The players have been suspended indefinitely. This is just a mess and it will be something that will be looked into and followed. Missouri will look to move on as they play Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec.21.
Oklahoma (8-2)- Oklahoma went to New York for a couple of days and came back with two more wins. Oklahoma beat Marist 80-71 on Wednesday. Then, the Sooners escaped Army with a 59-46 win on Thursday. Army led at the half and was only down 46-45 with six minutes to go, but the Sooners were too much as they pulled away at the end. The 15th ranked Sooners will now have to travel to Creighton on Dec. 20. This will be the fourth game against a Big 12 school for the Blue Jays.
Oklahoma State (6-2) – The Cowgirls just beat Vermont 68-63 to go 1-0 this week. Oklahoma State finds themselves just outside of the top 25, as they are currently ranked 28th. The Cowgirls will face U.C. Riverside on Dec. 17.
Texas (5-3) – The 17th ranked Longhorns have not played since their loss to Tennessee on Dec. 6. Their next game is against Mississippi on Dec. 16.
Texas A&M (7-1)- Well I called them a victim, and I think they took it offensive because TCU shocked the 13th ranked Aggies 56-54. The Aggies will now have to face 14th ranked Arizona State in the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec. 19.
Texas Tech (8-1) – Texas Tech has not played since beating Lamar 70-56 on Dec. 8. They will face UCLA on December 18th.
Baylor (8-1)- Britney Griner got her second freshmen of the week award as Baylor beat Boston College 68-65. The sixth-ranked Bears will play Oral Roberts to finish up the Maggie Dixon Classic on Dec. 16.
