FREEPORT, Bahamas – Iowa State held Loyola Marymount to 21.5 percent shooting from the field to defeat the Lions, 55-33, in the opening game of the Junkanoo Jam. The Cyclones improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Lions drop to 3-3.
It was the second-straight stifling defensive performance for the Cyclones, who held North Dakota to just 17.2 percent shooting in their last game. The Cyclones locked down on LMU’s Alex Cowling, who entered the game averaging over 19 points per game. Cowling was held to just 1-of-12 shooting and three points, all of which came in the second half.
Iowa State was led by Hallie Christofferson’s 11 points. Christofferson has now been in double figures in four games in a row dating back to last season.
Anna Prins was also in double figures, while Brynn Williamson pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds. Chelsea Poppens had eight points and six rebounds before leaving the game with an injury. Poppens was injured after running into a LMU player on a loose ball 12 minutes into the game.
The senior will miss tomorrow’s game and will be reevaluated when the Cyclones return to Ames.
The Cyclones took control of the game about six minutes in and never relinquished. After LMU cut it to 6-5, ISU went on a 19-0 run over the next 10 minutes. The Cyclones had a 30-8 lead at the half, holding the Lions to just 11.1 percent shooting in the opening stanza.
The Cyclones owned a 51-45 edge on the glass.
Iowa State returns to action Saturday when it faces either Tulsa or Illinois at 9 a.m. (CST).
