Johnson first team All-Big 12, Carleton and Buckley honored

Iowa State junior guard Seanna Johnson felt snubbed when she was left off the preseason All-Big 12 team by the league’s coaches. I suppose you could say she was the league’s best kept secret, or something like that.

Now the secret’s out as Johnson was named first team All-Big 12 Wednesday afternoon after finishing fourth in the league in scoring and second in rebounding. The Brooklyn Park, Minn. native averaged 16.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while also racking up 14 double-doubles, the second highest total in the Big 12.

One surprise from the Big 12 awards was Iowa State freshman Bridget Carleton not being recognized as Big 12 freshman of the year despite being a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman team.  She was also the only freshman named honorable mention All-Big 12.

West Virginia’s Tynice Martin was named the freshman of the year.

Sophomore guard Jadda Buckley was also named honorable mention All-Big 12 after averaging 11.4 points and 5.8 assists per game during the regular season. She was third in the conference in assists throughout the season and her 167 assists on the season are fifth all-time for Iowa State sophomores.

Iowa State takes on Texas Tech in the first game of the Big 12 tournament in Oklahoma City Friday night at 6. The winner will take on No. 1 seed Baylor in the quarterfinals.
