Another solid safety prospect has Iowa State high on his list. Colerain, Ohio safety Keontae Jones’ brother, class of 2016 Iowa State signee Deshaunte Jones, had helped him get familiar with the Cyclones before arriving in Ames for last weekend’s spring game.
That didn’t keep the three-star prospect from being surprised when he walked out of the tunnel and 15,000 fans.
“I wasn’t sure how many Iowa State fans would be there,” Jones said in a phone interview with Cyclone Fanatic on Tuesday. “It was cool hearing that crowd cheering once they came out and seeing the community.”
The 6-foot-1-inch, 175-pound prospect is rated as the sixth best safety in the Midwest and second in Ohio, by Scout, and the No. 87 safety nationally according to 247. Iowa State, Iowa and Indiana (no order) make up the top three he is focusing on right now but there is a solid list of offers that includes Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Illinois.
Jones also plans to take one more visit to take a visit to a big-time program that is yet to offer.
“I’ll probably take one more visit to Michigan State,” Jones said. “Then just work with this team so we can get the state championship.”
After visiting Ames, Jones took in Iowa City on Sunday before going back to Cincinnati. He capped off that busy few days by winning the 100 meter dash and long jump during his track meet on Tuesday.
“It was good,” Jones said about the visit to the Hawkeyes. “I liked it.”
He didn’t pick a favorite between the two visits saying, “they were about the same,” when asked which one stood out to him more. One thing that he did say for certain is that his brother going to Iowa State isn’t going to have an impact on his decision.
“It won’t play a factor,” Jones said. “I want to go somewhere I can make a name for myself.”
