ISU releases season-opening depth chart

AMES — Iowa State has released its depth chart for Saturday’s 2013 season-opener against Northern Iowa.

There are a few surprises but all in all, it looks similar to what Paul Rhoads released in mid-July.

NOTES

*** Former defensive end David Irving has earned a spot at the top of Iowa State’s depth chart at defensive tackle. Irving, who is listed at 6-foot-7, 272-pounds, apparently beat out JuCo transfer Rodney Coe for the starting up. Having said that, chances are that both of these guys will see quite a few snaps for the Cyclones on Saturday night. Both men have exclusively been playing the three-technique during fall camp so this is likely a case of only one guy being able to "start."

*** Iowa State’s starting offensive line is a bit of an eyebrow raiser. Senior Ethan Tuftee is listed at second string behind sophomore Jamison Lalk. Redshirt freshman Daniel Burton beat out sophomore Oni Omoile at the other guard spot.

Why is Tuftee listed as a two? Great question. Durability has always been an issue for the 6-foot-4, 314-pound veteran. Perhaps he is dinged up? We shall see.

*** Another noteworthy position is left cornerback, where redshirt freshman Charlie Rogers apparently held off sophomores Kenneth Lynn and Sam Richardson to maintain his spot as a starter.

*** No sign of true freshman cornerback Nigel Tribune

Paul Rhoads’ weekly Monday press conference will begin at 11:35 a.m. today.
