It’s throwback time

The following is a press release courtesy of Iowa State’s sports information department.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State football team will wear throwback uniforms from the 1920s when it hosts Iowa on Sept. 14, 2013, in Ames.

The uniforms feature vertical stripes on the front of the jerseys, similar to those worn by Jack Trice, the first African-American player in Cyclone history.

Trice, of course, played in two games at Iowa State and died from injuries suffered in a game at Minnesota during the 1923 season. Iowa State’s football stadium is named in his honor and that facility will host the game between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes.

The throwback uniforms will have white numerals on the front and gold numerals on the back. The helmets will be cardinal colored and include the player’s uniform number in gold. The Cyclones will wear gold-colored pants and cardinal-and-gold striped socks.

“The legend of Jack Trice is a critical piece of Iowa State football history,” Rhoads said. “His profound impact on our program resonates with our players today. This is a fitting tribute and our current football team is very excited to wear uniforms from that era.”

The Cyclones of 1923 were coached by Sam Willaman, the prep coach for Trice at Cleveland East Tech High School. Two of Trice’s high school teammates – brothers Norton and Johnny Behm – were also on that Iowa State team. The Behms were staples of ISU’s offensive attack, while Willaman went on to become head coach at Ohio State and Western Reserve.

The only other time that Iowa State wore a throwback uniform was its 2007 game with Iowa, commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the school’s Peach Bowl appearance. The Cyclones defeated Iowa, 15-13.

Fans will be able to bid – via an online auction – to acquire the game-worn uniforms (jerseys, pants, socks) at Cyclones.com.

More than 100 packages will be auctioned between Aug. 9-Sept. 13. Winning bidders will be able to get these uniforms at a date to be determined.

Fans can also buy replica merchandise at the following outlets: Cy’s Locker Room (Ames), University Bookstore (Ames) and Scheels (Des Moines, Coralville).
