Mangino hire excites quarterback commitment

There are few members of Iowa State’s 2014 recruiting class that will be impacted by Monday’s offensive coordinator hiring of Mark Mangino than Spring, Texas quarterback Darius Lee-Campbell.

The 2014 Iowa State commitment learned of the news from fellow future Cyclone, offensive lineman Cole Anderson via a text message.

“I just ran to my computer and started looking into him and was watching Kansas highlights to see what he does on offense,” Lee-Campbell said. “I was pretty impressed.”

Lee-Campbell said that he was planning on calling either Paul Rhoads or his lead recruiter, Iowa State offensive line coach Chris Klenakis later tonight for more details.

“I am still 100 percent committed to Iowa State,” Lee-Campbell said. “I want to talk to Coach Rhoads later tonight to see if Coach Mangino will be my quarterbacks coach or if Coach Rhoads is going to hire a different guy than the offensive coordinator.”

During media availability on Monday afternoon, Rhoads said that he had not decided who would coach the quarterbacks or tight ends. It is still unknown which position Mangino will oversee in addition to his coordinator duties.

Meanwhile, Lee-Campbell will continue to hang out on YouTube and study Mark Mangino’s successes at Kansas.

“I looked at the 2007 Kansas team and looked at how much talent they had on the field and they went to the Orange Bowl that year,” Lee-Campbell said. “I noticed how much they would throw the ball. Their quarterback was always out of the pocket. I liked to see that.”
