RECRUITING: Hummel finds his fit with the Cyclones

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise when Twitter lit up after Iowa State football picked up their ninth commitment in the class of 2017. This became the fourth Saturday in a row with a commitment for the Cyclones when Dowling Catholic linebacker Jake Hummel made his pledge.

The Cyclones are the only team so far to offer the three-star prospect and they were the first program to start recruiting him. That made the choice to commit a no-brainer.

“I chose Iowa state because along with being an Iowa State fan my entire life they were the first to get in and recruit me,” Hummel told Cyclone Fanatic in a text message Sunday morning. “After getting to know the staff and seeing the university my family and I decided it was the best choice.”

Hummel is rated as the 12th best prospect in the state of Iowa by 247 and the No. 50 inside linebacker in the nation. He’s the Cyclones’ fourth commit from the state joining Waterloo, West quarterback Devon Moore, Cedar Rapids, Washington linebacker O’Rien Vance and Ames offensive tackle Colin Newell.

I still doubt Matt Campbell is getting tired of sounding the sirens on Saturdays.

“Coach Campbell was pretty excited and explained how honored he was to recruit me and now have me be a Cyclone,” Hummel said. “The rest of the staff expressed the same.”

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound, prospect was second on the team in tackles and sacks last season for the Maroons with 65.5 tackles, 12 of which were for loss, and four sacks. He also had one interception that he returned for a touchdown for Dowling, who won the Class 4A state championship last fall with a dominating win over Cedar Rapids, Kennedy at the UNI Dome.

That means a repeat will be on Hummel’s mind this summer as he prepares for his senior season.

“Right now I don’t have exact plans for the summer but I’m guessing I will attend the ISU camp,” Hummel said. “And just overall train for my last season at Dowling Catholic.”

Hummel is the third linebacker in the class with Vance and Katy, Texas, middle linebacker Breydon Boyd. All nine of Iowa State’s commits are three-stars and their class is now ranked No. 27 in the country by 247.
