RECRUITING: JUCO tight end makes pledge to Iowa State

After E.J. Bibbs’ left via graduation, Iowa State’s tight ends haven’t been very involved in the passing game during the 2015 season.

Perhaps that is going to change next year.

Following Iowa State’s 24-0 victory over Texas on Saturday night, a junior college tight end named Clifford Fernandez gave Paul Rhoads a verbal commitment. Fernandez (below) tweeted the news on Sunday morning.

Fernandez, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound tight end out of Southwest Mississippi C.C., arrived in the JUCO ranks as a quarterback. He has spent many months transitioning to the tight end position, where he has 20 catches for 188 yards in eight games this season.

Fernandez doesn’t have a gaudy offer list. Only Northwestern State and Alabama State have offered so far. However, sources say that many mid-major type of programs have jumped in as of late.

Perhaps Iowa State believes they have found a diamond in the rough? Regardless, Iowa State desperately needs help at the tight end position and by going the way of a JUCO, Fernandez should at the very least be able to provide immediate depth in 2016.
