Williams Blog: More help for A-Rob, MBB depth notes

By Chris Williams

Before I dive into more depth/injury concerns for the Iowa State men’s basketball team, I thought I’d toss out a little much-needed football information today. Earlier this morning, interviewed Iowa State’s running back coach Kenneth Pope. As you’d expect, we talked a lot about Alexander Robinson and of course, Iowa State’s running back situation heading into spring football.

Pope made it very clear to me that one of the staff’s big goals during the spring is to find a second quality running back to compliment Robinson. Pope stressed the fact that most successful football teams, whether it be in college or the NFL, are using a two-back system. He wants to see Iowa State do more of that in 2010, regardless of who number two is.

A handful of guys come to my mind: James White, Beau Blankenship, even Bo Williams could be a factor. I still think that if 2010 commit Shontrelle Johnson does indeed sign with Iowa State, he could be the primary number two back. From what I hear, he is that good and would fit perfectly with Tom Herman’s offense. My entire interview with Pope will be up on CycloneFanatic.com later this week.
