Unless you think they are going to become a hard core racer, I would highly suggest going with a 4 stroke dirt bike. Honda XR80,100,200,250 depending on how old of a bike you are looking at. With a 4 stroke you can putz around on it where a 2 stroke motor is typically either wide azz open or nothing. Plus on a 2 stroke if you get a smaller motor 60,80 you have to feather the clutch alot because they have not torque when taking off until you get some rpm's. Then if you get a 125,250 or bigger two stroke and that motor gets hits the power band, it can be a dangerous weapon for somebody just learning the ropes. 2 strokes, especially the watercooled ones, are very prone to getting hot if you aren't running it wide open, the 4 strokes you can ride it all day idling and a lot funner to in my opinion.
Long story short. Get a 2 stroke if you want to race, get a 4 stroke for anything else...
