Official: Cory Johnson to Transfer

ISU Press release

Cory Johnson, a 6-7 sophomore from Duluth, Minn., will transfer from the Iowa State men’s basketball program according to head coach Greg McDermott.

“I simply want to earn more playing time,” Johnson said. “My time at Iowa State has been terrific. It was my personal dream to participate in intercollegiate basketball at the highest level. Playing at Iowa State and in the Big 12 Conference was a great experience. At the same time, I want to find a school where I can be a key contributor in the team’s lineup.”

Johnson’s departure will not affect the school’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) because of his academic success at Iowa State in concert with a new NCAA rule for transfer students. Johnson will be a “1-1” in APR parlance for the spring semester.

“Cory has been a real asset to the Iowa State men’s basketball program with his strong work ethic on the court and in school,” McDermott said. “One thing you can count on with Cory is extreme effort. In fairness to Cory, I can also understand his desire to see more time on the court. I’m obligated to give him the right advice and help him identify a school that suits his desires athletically and academically.”

Johnson played in 27 games this season and averaged 2.7 points while shooting 65.1 percent from the field. Johnson scored a career-high 13 points on two occasions. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.
