I don't think KF lost sight of what being a college coach is all about. I think he just quit caring and working.
Look at the evidence: From 2002-2004 Iowa goes 31-7. During these years Ferentz was paid somewhere around the middle of the pack compared to Big Ten coaching salaries.
After the 2004 season he signed a renegotiated contract with automatic raises that guarantees him between $25-30 million dollars through 2012. His record over the next three years fell from 31-7 to 19-18, and that's with easier schedules that included a Div II team (Montana) and no Ohio State and no Michigan for one of those years. For the past three years he's been the Big Ten's highest paid coach and his Big Ten record over that time is 13-19.
Hopefully
JP can learn from Iowa's mistake. If Chizik takes us to the upper echelon of the Big 12 I have no problem with locking him up with a long term contract. But we need to make sure his guaranteed salary stays reasonable and that he can get to the top pay level in the conference by hitting incentives. Money aside, we would look like idiots if we paid our coach the highest salary in the conference for a 13-19 record.
