You might as well think of it as the same thing that happened to football. Baggy long sleeve jersies used to be the thing, now all the uniforms are tight as can be. When my HS got new jerseys it was amazing how difficult it was to get the jersey to fit over the pads, and then try to put it on. Although football does I suppose have tights

EDIT: I would also like to add thought that this type of jersey is by far the most popular with recruits now adays. Same thing with the Oregon football uniforms, all I've heard from people on this board is that they hate them, but every HS football player I know thinks they are sick. Mostly has to do with them not growing up with the old style jersies I suppose.
