I understand hating a fan base - that's cool. But I've never got this loathing people have for one another simply because of the team they cheer for. "OMG, look at that ____ fan, I bet they live in a trailer and are the scum of the earth!"
It's fun to joke about that sort of thing from time to time, but comments people make (not just on message boards) can really make a person wonder.
Being a fan of a team doesn't make you a good/bad person, which is something I think people fail to realize. I agree with you on that. I am guilty of it myself. But it is like that everywhere. I am sure it gets worse in some parts of the country.
