I don't expect you to know this since you follow the "other" team, but that was us in 2006. We had a senior offensive line, a QB in Bret Meyer that was considered to be the class of the Big XII (more because of the shortage of QBs in the league that year than because he was actually that good), and a very good running game. The defense was a little suspect as it was young, but the media figured the offense had the capability of scoring enough points to cover the glaring shortcomings that came with the youth and inexperience of the defense. 2006 was supposed to be the year

Yes, experience is a good thing, but as Jeff Dunham's puppet Peanut would say, "polish a turd, it's still a turd." If your players have 3 years of less than mediocre play, odds are that in the 4th year they're still going to be mediocre players, just with playing experience.
