It isn't funny to me that JP sees this as a great opportunity, it's concerning. TCU plays in a 50 year-old, 7,000-seat arena that's usually half-full. They're like Drake prior to last year, for god's sake.
There is only one explanation for JP to see this as a great opportunity - to work with, and win with, new coach Jim Christian, who did wonders at Kent State. Assistant coaches from winning programs get the head coaching jobs, regardless of their "rank" on the staff.
Phelps wasn't even Sendek's #1 assistant, but he got the Drake job because ASU is now winning.
