My favorite memory of being asked that happened a few years ago at the Big 12 Tournament in KC. We were eating breakfast in a room full of big time Texas boosters with Coach Barnes walked in. He made a comment that he wanted to know where we got "that bird" in our logo. We told him we would explain it when he told us where they came up with that shade of poop brown.
I would guess most people are telling the story that prior to the Northwestern game that we became the "Cyclones" in we were the Cardinals...which is NOT true. Cardinal was our school color but Cy and the Cardinal are relatively new arrivals both occuring in the 1950's when
ISU decided it needed a mascot. People usually do not ask me why the bird is in a tornado so much as simply "what the h#&^ is your logo supposed to be?" That, I will be glad to be done with. Of course most of the people I deal with are not in state or in the Big12.
