I think some are using the terms "christian" and "Roman Catholic" interchangably in this conversation. to clarify, not all christians are rc, but all rc are christians.

The r-catholic church goes into detail about their stances on almost every issue, they even make silly little clarifications like the story that started this thread when they come up. Literal translations of the bible are less frequent than some in the press would have you believe ... although transfiguration is a hefty example for the other side.

The r-c church does not want to look bad, and as such has researchers and scientific minds of their own looking into issues from aliens to evolution and is not as far from the "main-stream" science on many topics as most laypeople beleive. Of course, no one wants to read church stances (I can only imagine the boredom) all day long to figure it out, so most just assume to know.
