I see what you mean, because as the state's second largest city, Iowa State has every right (and by every means SHOULD) try to tap that market as much as possible. In fact, I believe Iowa State really needs to try and get more exposure in the eastern part of the state, since it is far more populated than any other part of Iowa.
BUT, there is absolutely no denying that Cedar Rapids is as black and gold as it gets. Seeing that downtown Cedar Rapids is literally 20 minutes from the Iowa campus, Cedar Rapids natives are born Hawkeye fans. The Cedar Rapids Gazette might as well be renamed the Hawkeye Herald.
Hawkeye fans view it if you were trying to tap the Cedar Rapids market, you would have placed a billboard on 1st Avenue, Collins Road, or Blairs Ferry at some major intersection within the city. Not conveniently on the very edge of the city on the way to Iowa City. It is a blatant attempt to rile Hawkeye fans.
That being said (playing Devil's Advocate) I am all for breaking into the Cedar Rapids market, diluting the Hawkeye hold. It's sickening how little Cedar Rapidians know about the other two state schools.
