BUT, there is absolutely no denying that Cedar Rapids is as black and gold as it gets. Seeing that downtown Cedar Rapids is literally 20 minutes from the Iowa campus, Cedar Rapids natives are born Hawkeye fans. The Cedar Rapids Gazette might as well be renamed the Hawkeye Herald.
Hawkeye fans view it if you were trying to tap the Cedar Rapids market, you would have placed a billboard on 1st Avenue, Collins Road, or Blairs Ferry at some major intersection within the city. Not conveniently on the very edge of the city on the way to Iowa City. It is a blatant attempt to rile Hawkeye fans.
That being said (playing Devil's Advocate) I am all for breaking into the Cedar Rapids market, diluting the Hawkeye hold. It's sickening how little Cedar Rapidians know about the other two state schools.
I dont live in CR anymore, but when I was visiting my parents, I thought I recalled seeing a "I chose Iowa State" billboard on Collins Road near Lindale Mall around the time the other CYCLONE STATE billboard was up on the interstate.
You are right, every inroad we can make in the Cedar Rapids market (& in the eastern half of the state) is a very good thing
