IIRC, Adam Carper has a similar role with the football team--helping out the coaches during practice. Athletes on scholarship can retain their scholarship after a career-ending injury if they take up a position in the athletic department. I believe this is an NCAA rule, and if the athlete chose not to work in the athletic dept they would no longer receive their scholarship.
This also applies to fifth year students who have exhausted their eligablility...
