No. 5 ISU Wrestlers Face No. 1 Minnesota
Media Relations

The fifth-ranked Cyclone wrestlers will face top-ranked Minnesota Friday in Hilton Coliseum at 8 p.m. ISU comes into the dual with a 2-1 record, while Minnesota is 4-1.

Series Notes

These two top-caliber teams will show down in Hilton Coliseum for the 55th time, with ISU holding the all-time series record at 41-12-2. Clashing last year in Minneapolis, Minnesota defeated Iowa State for the first time since 1995, 21-13. The Golden Gophers have not beaten the Cyclones in Hilton Coliseum since 1998.

Scouting Minnesota

The Golden Gophers began the season as the nation’s top-ranked team. Minnesota fell in their season-opening dual against Hofstra at the Northeast Duals, 18-17. Minnesota has since tallied four dual .

Minnesota returns seven NCAA qualifiers from last year’s NCAA runner-up team. Among the seven are four All-Americans and NCAA champions, Dustin Schlatter (149) and Cole Konrad (HWT).

At 149-pounds, Schlatter, who won the 2006 NCAA title as a true freshman, is off to a 9-0 start and will square off against redshirt freshman Cyler Sanderson. Sanderson is undefeated in dual meet action and carries an overall record of 11-2.

Another match-up that will feature highly-ranked wrestlers is at 184-pounds. Minnesota junior Roger Kish will face redshirt freshman Jake Varner. The wrestlers come in ranked second and third respectively. Kish finished as the 184-pound runner-up at last season’s NCAA tournament and currently is 9-0. He has tallied five wins via pin. Varner is 10-0 and has registered seven pins.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.
