Cyclones Fall to Iowa, 77-59

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Wesley Johnson tallied 13 points and nine rebounds, but Iowa State could not overcome 26 turnovers in a 77-59 loss to Iowa Friday night in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The Cyclones outrebounded the Hawkeyes, 43-30, but were hampered by turnovers and hot shooting by Iowa. The Hawkeyes shot 45.9 percent from the field, including 6-of-8 from three point range.
“We did some good things in both the Drake and Northern Iowa games, but we lost,” said
ISU head coach Greg McDermott. “I’m not sure we did as many good things tonight. Iowa deserves some of the credit for that, they pressured us and got us to turn it over a few times and then they smelled blood and came after us.”
Iowa State (6-3) also received 13 points from Mike Taylor and 10 each from Dodie Dunson and Jiri Hubalek. Rahshon Clark had a team-high 11 rebounds for the Cyclones, his fourth double-digit rebounding effort of the season.
The Hawkeyes (5-5), who led the entire game, were paced by Adam Haluska’s 18 points and Tyler Smith’s 16.
Iowa State fell behind early, trailing 15-9, as Wesley Johnson scored
ISU’s first nine points. The Cyclones were able to get within five at 30-25 with 3:47 left in the first half before an Iowa 12-0 run, sparked by nine points from Haluska, pushed the Hawkeye lead to 42-25. Dunson, who scored 10 first half points, had the last five points of the half for
ISU to close the margin to 42-30 at intermission.
After Iowa scored the first four points of the second half,
ISU went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to get within eight at 46-38. Haluska hit a 3-pointer and the Hawkeyes again put distance between them and the Cyclones, going up by 12 with under 12 minutes remaining.
The Cyclones then went four and a half minutes without a field goal as Iowa went on an 8-2 run to go up 59-43, effectively ending any hopes of a Cyclone comeback.
The Cyclones will be back in action Wednesday (Dec. 13) as they play host to Savannah State at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
