After it became a huge hit, they decided that it wasn't going to be worth it to scale production up after-the-fact, so they haven't been producing them at a rate that will meet demand.

The WII is a pretty amazing story, really. I haven't seen anything like it since the original NES.

This excites me, because it's success may hopefully open the door to take bigger risks next time around.
