Financial Partners Matter Right Now ("We Will Collective" is separate from Cardinal & Gold Wrestling Collective)

Cyclone Fans:

Never in the history of college athletics has there been a time when the financial contributions of individuals and corporations have mattered more. The fact of the matter is: Donor dollars increase the ability to win!

I have spent hundreds of hours this past year talking about the importance of donor dollars for both the newly formed Cardinal & Gold Collective and the Cyclone Regional Training Center.

Both the Collective and the Cyclone RTC are invaluable to running a top-notch Division I wrestling program. Teams at the very top increasingly operate as their own small businesses. As the CEO of the Cyclone Wrestling program, it is on my staff and I -- along with all of our many supporters -- to find the resources to win. The ability of wrestling programs to meet this challenge will determine their chances of succeeding the highest level, which continues to be my goal.

The Cardinal & Gold Collective was formed in May 2023 and it already is having an impact on our team and athletes. The Collective is a for-profit corporation managed and run out of Okoboji, IA by Ryan and Patty Rohlk. They started the Collective to provide Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities for wrestlers. These wrestlers make appearances for payment throughout the state, around the calendar. Donation dollars to the Collective are not tax deductible, due to IRS rules.

In just one year, the Collective has become a key player in our landscape. It has helped our athletes pay their college bills and enabled the Collective to attract top competitors to Ames. I believe that showed with our 4th place finish this year at the NCAA Tournament in Kansas City.

The Collective also just hired David Carr in the position of associate director – allowing him to use his skills to communicate with key athletes and also raise money to attract and keep those athletes.

David just kicked off his first Collective campaign to encourage 500 new donors to make monthly contributions to the Collective – at the $50 and $100 levels. You can respond to that campaign HERE (https://cardinalandgold.org/support-our-athletes/) and help David towards his goal of 500!

You also can make a donation of your choice at that link.

The other major driver of our success is the Cyclone RTC – a 501©3 nonprofit organization we formed in April 2017 to support our staff and our athletes and all the expenses they incur to train and compete, mainly in freestyle wrestling events throughout the season and the off season. This provides us with a much-needed Olympic/freestyle component.

The C-RTC also currently supports four post-graduate athletes who are invaluable training partners in the practice room: R. Ortega, D Carr, M. Coleman, and D. Lee.

And the RTC offers training opportunities for other college athletes and qualified HS wrestlers within 250 miles of Ames. Hundreds of wrestlers over the past 7 years have come to Ames – and continue to come to train with the Cyclone RTC.

Next month is the kick-off of a summer full of C-RTC events and we invite you to join us at one of those. Take a look HERE (https://cyclonertc.org/#events) to see if you can fit any of these into your schedule. Right now would be a great time to register for any of these events! I’ll personally be at each one with my staff and athletes and would love to see you there.

The purpose of my message today is to update and educate all of you who have supported us over the years in some form or fashion, whether that was by giving money, participating in a golf event, donating an auction item or maybe just being a fan and season ticket holder.

Finally, and most importantly, we cannot win without you – our financial partners! I truly look at every dollar coming into our two organizations as a partnership with our program. I encourage you to take the first step toward a partnership with us – and thank those of you who already help us for your continued support.

Generator Question

I've been thinking of buying a generator with all of the weather recently to use to run my fridge, freezer, and to use as a sump pump backup rather than a battery backup. I was looking at a small inverter Honda one. Does anyone have any advice on generators or should I buy a larger one? I like the small inverter ones due to the appeal of using it for tailgating etc.

South Dakota pheasant hunt

Has anyone here pheasant hunted South Dakota in the past few years? I’m looking for any Dos, Don’ts, things to watch out for while hunting there.

For as long as I can remember my dad has talked of hunting SD but never gone so I told him we’re going this year. Tentatively planning to hunt 3 days the week before Thanksgiving. We will be taking my 10 yo black lab and 2 yo yellow lab. Most likely will hunt the Southeast quadrant of the state.

iphone feature

I'm usually late to the party on these things, partially because I have a cell phone for the sole purpose to make and receive calls, but it was brought to my attention that my iphone has a built in (not an app driven) weed and plant identification feature. It is as simple as snapping a picture of the subject, tapping the thumbnail of the picture that appears with the photo, and then hitting the information icon that appears below that. I don't know the accuracy of this feature as I only tried it once on a closeup of a beautiful blossom (no foliage) from my yellow peony and it classed it as a poppy. Told this to a friend and he said that his son uses it to identify trees simply by snapping a picture of the bark. Would be handy to identify weeds in the lawn for proper herbicide use, etc. If this is old news, call me grandpa and move on :):). If you have used it, how accurate has it been?

Disability or other discrimination situations

Ok, so I've been struggling with something and need to vent. For background, this is related to my Parkinson's and inability to walk without a cane or do a lot with my hands (carry things, fine motor skills, etc). I really try to be a calm, rational, and understanding person so am not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill. But this is really bugging me.

I was at the Lowe’s on Jordan Creek in West Des Moines, IA on Saturday. I was looking for a plumbing part to go along with a garbage disposal I had in my cart and the only associate I could find was at the appliance desk (he was in late 40s or 50s). I politely asked him if he could help me find something because I couldn’t find it after spending probably 10 minutes trying. He said it’s down aisle 34. I asked if he could help because I already looked there. All this time, he was looking at my cane and could clearly see I was having issues walking due and pushing the cart. He said no, it’s in 34. Again I asked for his assistance, and again he refused to move - and there were no other customers around waiting for help.

I went to isle 34 and looked again for probably 10 minutes. I went to find him again and when he saw me coming, he immediately turned around and walked away. I hit the help button in plumbing and it rang over the PA for over 10 minutes without anybody coming before just turning itself off. He walked by a couple isles away and saw me waiting there. He kept casually walking away; again he wasn’t helping anybody.

I kept waiting and looking and had to finally yell at somebody a ways away to get somebody to help. It took them over 5 minutes to find the part and it wasn’t in aisle 34.

I feel this associate purposely discriminated against me for being handicap, despite me being polite and trying multiple times to find it myself. I have never in my life felt so dehumanized and belittled as I did. I have only had my disability for around a year and this is my first encounter where I feel it wasn't just a case of bad customer experience - and I really try to be understanding and accepting of those types of things as everybody has a bad day.

I was so worked up, my chest was hurting like I was going to have a heart attack (had one last year), my blood pressure went through the roof (had 3 strokes last year), and I was shaking so badly I almost got into an accident. All which then led to a panic attack. I am a very calm and rational person, but that is absolutely unacceptable and demonstrates the level of discrimination I perceived. When I (very visibly upset) told the cashier that I was treated very rudely by an associate, she didn't even acknowledge it or apologize for that experience, let alone attempt to escalate the matter.

I called the store right when I got home and demanded to speak to the manager (call me Karen if you want). She was dismissive and flippant to the point she was hanging up when I said, um... don't you want my name and number in case you have questions?

I then found the Executive Customer Experience email address and sent a complaint matching the above. I've gotten a few replies going back and forth, but it's basically "thanks for letting us know, now forget it" every time. That doesn't address 1- the discrimination I felt, 2 - give me any comfort that those involved are held accountable, and/or 3 - show a true interest in acknowledging and fixing what may be a systemic issue at either that store or culturally in the organization.

It's very clear that at no level in the organization is there genuine understanding of what basic, consistent, and unbiased customer service and experiences should be for everybody, regardless of race, gender, disability, or anything else.

From the clear discrimination by one or more associates, the flippant handling of the complaint from the store manager, to the canned responses, I honestly don't feel like Lowe's cares one iota about how it treats those with disabilities. It's even more egregious when those customers are doing everything they can to both be polite and respectful to associates, and go out of their way - despite their struggles - of resolving matters themselves.

What I need to determine is how to proceed. Do I forget the discrimination and the immediate and lasting pain it has caused? Do I start a social media trend for people to share their stories of discrimination by Lowe's associates (I'm guessing something like that would normally trending, but I've never Tweeted or thus have followers)? Do I file a formal ADA Civil Rights Complaint? I don't know the answer.

Shout out to my great uncle

Harold Swisher who turned 101 today. He stormed the beach at Normandy as a teen who volunteered. He fought at the Battler of the Bulge, and every major battle in Europe. He lost a toe to frostbite, but was otherwise intact at the end of WWII.

He was recognized by Senator Joe Manchin for his service at the WV capital last year on his 100th birthday. He and his 99-year-old wife, who've been married for over 70 years, still live on their own and drive. Both are still mentally all there.

Mass/Group Texting App Suggestions

Work for a small non-profit. I need an app for iPhone that I can send text message event reminders, updates, etc to a group of about 150 people.

Used to use Easy Message but it was discontinued.

Want something that just shows up as a text on their end. Not an app they have to download as well.

Not opposed to something I have to pay for but budget is limited. Thanks for the advice.

Iowa hate thread

This is the place to let out all hate towards Iowa so we have room to build up more this next season…

Topics to discus…

Bad offense

Easiest schedule in country every year

Haven’t beaten ranked opponent in fb for 3 years, probably none to come

Terrible basketball program

2 trips to the woman’s natty past 2 years, 0-2

0-3 in B10 championships last 10 years

Haven’t been to a S16 since the beginning of time

Near washed coaches

"Wave hi to the people at the football game!" More like wave bye to the 1 million dollars Iowa paid EA to include a 3-second clip of the ritual that could have saved your life.

Feel free to add on

Summer Thread: The decline of the sedan

Anyone else bummed that the auto industry is pivoting away from sedans in recent years?

I was reading today that Genesis is ending the G70 line. I've owned two of them, as daily drivers, and they're honestly my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. It seems like every other day I'm reading about a different manufacturer cancelling a sedan line.

Dodge Charger
Chrysler 300
Kia Stinger
Nissan Maxima
Nissan Altima
Mercedes A class
And quite a few others.

Don't get me wrong, I get it. I'm in the minority. The masses prefer SUVs, crossovers and trucks, and the manufacturers have to produce for demand, but boy do I prefer the look and feel of a sedan. Toyota and Honda have the Camry and Accord, which seem to be doing okay. And the German brands don't seem to be ready to give up yet, but there's not a lot of variety out there in that space.

Tamin Lipsey's rest and rehab is vitally important as ISU seeks to build off its Sweet 16 appearance

Who are your favorite golfers?

It's an interesting sport, and without teams to root for (puke on that LIV), I find myself with certain favorites (usually based on a combination of ability and personality), other guys I find likable and fun to watch, and then the rest (with a very select few that I root against). Anyway, I was curious about everyone's list. Mine:

Favorites: Max Homa, Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Xander Schauffele (+Tiger when he was in his prime due to sheer dominance and force of will)

Likable and fun to watch: Scottie Scheffler, Victor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Rory McElroy, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Akshay Bhatia

NCAA Settlement

It looks like the NCAA is proposing the Non-P4 conferences pick up 60% of damages related to the NCAA's settlement with athletes over NIL. How does that make any sense? It would seem like the P4 conferences should pay for the vast majority of the damages. And IMO there should be a formula based on a school having elite level athletes, as that pool of players would have received the vast majority of NIL $.

Here are some quotes form ESPN article linked below:

The memo detailed how the NCAA could split up an expected $1.6 billion that would come from reductions in NCAA distribution, sources told ESPN. The remaining $1.1 billion is expected to come from NCAA reserves, catastrophic insurance, new revenue and budget cuts, sources said.

Of that $1.6 billion, nearly 60% is expected to come from leagues outside the Power 5 conferences that are named in the House lawsuit, sources said. (The NCAA is named, and all of the schools are members.) The other 40% will come from the power conferences.

************
"We're not named in the lawsuit," said a source in a smaller league. "We don't have a voice in any of this. We're just being told what our taxation is."

**************
Added another source in a CCA22 league: "This is incredibly unfair and has a dramatic impact. I'm losing about 10% of my operating budget. Do I cut two staff members in order for money to go to Zion Williamson? Ninety percent of the money in the suit projects to go to Power 5 football and men's basketball players. The 40% payment for the power conference isn't proportionate."
