Hitting for the cycle is good, but by no means does it take an amazing player to do it(case and points last player was Aubrey Huff). Carlos Gomez is a tremendous talent but right now he's very inconsistant, maddeningly so. He'll have nights like this, or opening night for that matter but other days he'll go 0-4 with 4 K's. I refuse to jump on his jock until: he proves he can figure out what a strike zone is and along with that, talk a walk every once in awhile. His hitting has looked pretty good other than that so far and with his speed 60+ steals wouldn't be hard at all but you have to get on base at a much better clip than .300

he is 22...and is a very fast electrifying player...he is exactly what the twins need to compete...play small ball with his stolen bases and agressive base running. if you're a twins fan you'd agree with all the free agent/trade departures.

Gomez is exactly what the Twins need to compete... in 3 years maybe. This is purely hypothetical but I'd much rather have Torii at this point than Gomez, 2 years from now I'm hoping thats not the case. He doesn't recognize the strike zone, a problem Delmon Young deals with as well, can a few players get away with that? Yeah they can but most if they don't learn it end up being consistent underachievers.

As far as the offseason happenings....hell no I'm not happy with all of it. I still feel the Johan deal was botched a bit. Adam Everett the Twins already had a player on their team who can't hit for $*#@ and play good defense, his name is Nick Punto. Craig Monroe especially with the acquisition of Young was dumb he's expensive, kinda old and blocks either Pridie or Kubel. Livan Hernandez is a mistake in my mind as well. We have tons of young good pitching let them have their chance(Blackburn, Slowey, Baker, Bonser, Duensing, Humber, Mulvey, Perkins, Swarzak just to name a few) yes he's looked pretty good so far but he's been in decline for several years and I'd be surprised if he ends the year with an era below 4.8. Old, over the hill veterans usually don't end up well, see: Ramon Ortiz, Sidney Ponson, Tony Batista, Rondell White, Brett Boone.

Still overall the trades weren't terrible, I actually liked the Young deal pretty well. Was in favor of the Lamb deal though he hasn't hit well yet.

Re: Twins at White Sox

You can't really say they botched the Santana deal since you don't know what was actually offered. Some of the rumored offers seem better, but there has also been word that some of those offers weren't actually made.

And I wouldn't want Hunter for 18 million a year in any circumstance. I would especially consider this a bad move if we went with your plan to start all the young pitchers.

The Livan pickup was very smart. He'll chew up innings. You can't go through the whole season with all those new guys tiring out the bullpen.

Kubel is getting his playing time, so Monroe isn't really blocking him. And really, would it be better for Pridies development to sit on the bench and occasionally pinch hit and play 2 days a week? Monroe is a relatively cheap option to fill in there and he's done a pretty good job so far.

I think they should have made a better effort, earlier to resign Santana, of the deals offered I did like the Mets trade the best.

I'm guessing that Hunter will be more valuable this year and next year and that after that Gomez will have progressed and not flopped out like quite a few toolsy guys such as him.

Livan yeah he'll eat innings at around a 5 era(his era going down being a year older, switching to a hitters league with another 200 innings on his arm is unlikely) which to me isn't all that exciting, give the young guys a chance that way we know what we have for the future(I'm skeptical on the Twins chances to contend this year, Detroit and Cleveland won't hover around .500 all year). We have a plethora of pitching in the minors, pretty much top to bottom, either need to trade it or use it. The bullpen shouldn't be that stressed as we effectively have two long relievers on it capable of solid pitching in Brian Bass and Matt Guerrier.

Monroe has hit decently, although he's a victim of the Twin's disease of avoiding walks like the plague, but I'd hardly call 4.5 million dollars cheap.
