KGYM: Balbinot and Brommelkamp declare Big XII all but dead
Unash and co. at KGYM do a great job at covering high school sports but I generally avoid local sports talk radio in this area because it has always been ****-poor to non-existent.
KGYM unveiled a new schedule recently with the addition of Balbinot & Brommelkamp in the drive-time slot. I started the car after work yesterday and heard the familiar voice of Dan McCarney on the show and I thought, OK maybe they're onto something here. In the past, the CR Prairie girls JV softball coach would have been a top-notch guest on KGYM.
Today I start the car and find them in the middle of a discussion about ISU fans and the perception of biased coverage in Eastern Iowa. There is no bias, they said, it's just a fact of life that the U of I is 20 miles down the road, which is obviously true. They went on to spout about how they'd just had Dan McCarney on and gee, shouldn't that just right every wrong in the universe.
Then, they went into a discussion of the Big XII conference. Apparently they had just had Randy Peterson on and, since he was no longer on the air with them to defend himself, they proceeded to bash him for stating that the Big XII was now seemingly on solid footing. They cited the argument that Texas got too much of the TV money and this new TV deal didn't change that all. The new TV deal solved nothing, in their words. They went on to blather about how Texas has this new $300 million TV deal and maybe they'd "siphen some" (their words) off to the other members, but they're still getting all the money and everyone else is just left with table scraps. I quickly figured out these guys, like so many in the pro-Hawk media, had ZERO understanding of the new Fox TV deal and that the Longhorn Network was only for third tier rights. Basically their whole argument was based on their misunderstanding that Texas was getting $300 million off the top, which is completely untrue, the Longhorn Network has ZERO impact on the other member schools since it is just third tier. They then went on to imply it was a foregone conclusion that A&M and Missouri were both still going to leave and then the Big XII would be in the position of having to find two more teams to replace them. And, they said, there aren't two teams out there who would be interested in joining.
I called in to set them straight, but my cell battery died during the break leading up to the top of the hour and I had to get out of my car to run an errand. By the time I got back to my car they had moved on to what is undoubtedly their favorite topic, the Hawks and Big Ten football. I was hoping someone called in while I was away and set them straight, but I'm not hopeful.
They had a chance to win a fan by actually doing their homework and putting on a good show. But today they just went and exposed themselves for what they are: Hawk fans with microphones. And uneducated ones at that.

It's Eastern Iowa. What do you expect? I have accepted the fact that outside of the 30 radius from Ames, none of the media or sports talk gives a **** about us. No need to get your blood pressure up because of it.

I guess expecting them to do a little research and not spread blatant misinformation was too much to ask though.

Why get all butt hurt about a couple of lackeys from Cedar Rapids who are pro hawk?

Re: KGYM: Balbinot and Brommelkamp declare Big XII all but dead
What? Are you telling me the Hawkeye fans and Hawkeye media have no idea what is going on with the Big 12 except that it's dead? Shocking.
I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU
Or so I have read. -

I lisened to this show for the first week hopeing it would not be completely hawk biased. I almost made it through the first show. I caught a topic on how nebraska is going to get rolled over because the big ten is just more physical on defense and big 12 offenses are not that good. I am not a nebraska fan, but they found a way to insult iowa state numerous times in the segment. That was it I was done. I am not surprised they did it again. I don't understand why a cyclone radio affiliate would be so biased. one hour should be devoted to the Williams and Arnuad call in show. One can only dream...........

I know we shouldn't expect much out of them, but come on, they are on the "Eastern Iowa's home of the Cyclones" and do nothing but spout about the Hawkeyes for 3 hours each afternoon. I can't even listen to them. I really wish they had left Dan Patrick on in the 3-6 slot and put these retards on in the 12-3 slot where I wouldn't have to listen to them. Bob Bruce on 600 WMT is more objective than these two.

Re: KGYM: Balbinot and Brommelkamp declare Big XII all but dead
When the media in Central Iowa does next to nothing in terms of researching things around ISU and intentionally disrespects ISU on a regular basis, why would you expect anything more from Eastern Iowa?
In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection. -
Re: KGYM: Balbinot and Brommelkamp declare Big XII all but dead
I actually give them props simply because they recognized that ISU existed.

Re: KGYM: Balbinot and Brommelkamp declare Big XII all but dead
I thought Iowa didn't care about ISU?

This might be THE worst radio show I've ever heard. Not because they trash I-State, but because it is painful to listen to these guys interact. These guys try real hard to be funny and they're not. The one guy sounds like he has a mouth full of mashed potatoes, AND he is an expert on everything. I haven't listened to sports talk radio since moving from Des Moines. Sad, that I would be missing the DM sports radio market.

I also miss the DM sports media. 1600 is terrible and WMT is nothing but hawks. Like someone else said, the best they have over here is Bob Bruce.

In other news, Big 10+2 reporters are still as whiny and annoying as always.

So a hawk comes on cyclonefanatic, with a trolling username, and digs up a topic from several days ago.
Laughable.
