Hey Boomer -- Big 12 Network
Hey Boomer --
Any idea if there is a timeline on OU making a decision about whether to go together with the other 9 on a Big 12 network or going lone wolf? What do you think about the new Pac-12 model where there is one main network with several regional broadcasts? Seems like that could be a possible model for the 9 to follow:
Big 12 Network (featuring everyone but UT)
Sub networks, regional specific:
Texas -- Baylor, Tech, A&M
Oklahoma -- OU, OSU
Kansas -- KSU, KU
Iowa/Missouri -- ISU, MU
I'm getting antsy because I would like to see this get done by the start of the 2012 football season and for that to happen, seems like the wheels need to start turning pretty quick.

That actually seems like a great idea to me. Schools would then have access to all the other Big 12 content to show if they wish, but they could still feature the content of most interest to their viewers.
As opposed to the Pac-12 model though, you are probably going to have different revenue amounts for each of the involved schools. For instance ISU could take 30 or 40% of what Mizzou would take since Mizzou would have a lot more TV sets. This would add incentive for the big schools like Oklahoma to partner up with OSU. Yet there could be some sort of deal set up to share all content between the 9 schools. Then there is not the problem that the Horn Network has of having no content to show except for a reality show about what type of gum Garrett Gilbert is chewing each day.
Content would also be much easier to distribute to cable networks since the content is so regionally directed.
This makes too much sense, so it probably won't happen.
Re: Hey Boomer -- Big 12 Network
Oklahoma is still pursing solo options at the moment. Timeline wise if there isn't significant news by the spring I believe a Big XII network will be in the works or atleast being seriously considered
There is some rumblings that NBC is interested in helping getting it on its feet right now. NBC just rebranded Versus as NBC College Sports, some rumblings they want that umbrella to feature OU

So even though they want to feature OU this network would still be a Big 12 network with the 9 teams and minus Texas?

Makes sense. Any idea on what the Aggies are doing with their tier 3 or are they waiting on you guys? Mizzou? KU?

I'd even go for uniting all of Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri. There's more than enough airtime to split amongst 4 schools.

Perhaps this is just wishful thinking on my part, but I assume that if OU were to crunch the numbers and found out that a Big 12 - Texas Network would be more profitable long term than an OU Network that the Sooners would be pursuing it, right?
I assume only Aggie is willing to suffer financial loss to satisfy ego.
Re: Hey Boomer -- Big 12 Network
How would this Big 12 - Texas network fit in with the new Fox Sports football TV contract?

Each school still gets 1 early football game for their third tier rights so with 9 schools there would be 9 live football games plus several men's basketball games from each school, and women's basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling and so on. Add spring games, coach shows, post game interviews, and it could be a really cool network with plenty of interesting content.
The football games would probably be the least attractive ones so this year if the network existed it would likely have
Stephen F. Austin at Baylor
Northern Iowa at Iowa State
McNeese State at Kansas
Eastern Kentucky at Kansas State
Western Illinois at Missouri
Ball State at Oklahoma
Louisiana-Lafayette at Oklahoma State
Idaho at Texas A&M
Texas State at Texas Tech

Fox gets to choose 1 game for each team that the team can keep to resell/market however it wants. Fox is included in negotiations for the Big 12 network. If they were the ones that landed the deal, they would have incentive to make it work so they might even let a decent game or two fall to the Big 12 network to make sure that the states in the footprint put it on basic cable. Plus, the conference did state that it would be willing to get creative in scheduling to maximize revenue.
So, I would expect that one football game featuring each school that is part of the Network would be spread out over several Saturdays during football season. Probably see a Game Day like pre-game show at that school prior to the "game of the week" airing focusing on all the Big 12's games that week. Then you'd have a Big 12 Sportscenter like program to recap the games that night (and likely during basketball season as well). You'd also have several 3rd tier basketball games for each of the schools to show as well as Olympic sports, coach shows, etc. It is a channel that any fanatic would love, that's for sure and give us some extra exposure for games that don't usually get a lot of exposure ala the Big 10 Network.

Sign me up. This sounds like what I've been waiting all my life for.

If NBC college sports backs the OU network, OU will not be part of a Big XII network

How realistic do you think that is? Considering that Texas has had no one pick up the LHN, is OU or NBC really willing to step forward and try the same thing Texas has had zero luck with?
I'd imagine NBC would be more interested in 9 football games than 1.
Re: Hey Boomer -- Big 12 Network
I'm pretty skeptical that the Longhorn Network will work, even with their huge following. I am really really skeptical that an OU network would work. The Big Ten Network works because it is on basic cable in many states. I can't ever see a network dedicated to one school getting on basic cable in any state outside of the one said school is from.
Re: Hey Boomer -- Big 12 Network
The Big Ten Network is great when showing an actual live football or basketball game but everything else is crap. I wonder what the Big 10 Network viewership rating is when they aren't showing a football or basketball game.
