I haven't been wowed by any of their brews. This IPA is just too malty for my taste.
My favorite "mass produced" IPAs are Bell's Two Hearted, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Peace Tree Double, Bell's Hopslam, Big Sky IPA, and Boulevard Single Wide. When I drink an IPA, I want the damn hops, so any IPA that isn't aggressively hop forward just isn't my cup of joe. Shoot, I thought they might be distributing in Iowa. Thanks for the review, I've thankfully not been preparing myself for beer nirvana, but I've been curious. Admittedly, I'm not a hop-head. I'm not the 'ewww, what's all this flavor' of the typical lite drinker, I just like a balanced beer. I know others have different opinions, but I just think for some people, the hoppy beer thing has replaced the hottest food thing. It's a misplaced wiener measurer. Not for all, but for some.

I would agree. Some folks won't even drink other styles of beer. It's like seeing who can eat the spiciest food or something.
I like a lot of other styles, but when I'm drinking an IPA, I want certain things out of it. I don't exclusively drink them, but it's just a preference. I really enjoy the taste of hops, and I don't pick up IPA unless I want hops. Therefore, when I have a maltier IPA, it's just not what I was looking for you know? It doesn't mean its a bad beer, just not what I was seeking.

I am kind of a contrarian. Being the hottest thing kinda makes me head the other direction. It's usually over hyped. I will never disregard or browbeat anyone who has an actual preference or reasoning for any beer. But if it's marketing or spin, f-off. Point Special is an american lager. Especially in the summer, that's a valid style, and if done correctly, is fine. I love the experimentation going on in beer right now, and believe it or not, the USA is envied for that right now, but I'm not a huge fan of the path of pushing one part of the equation all the way out of whack. "This is the (strongest, hoppiest, bitterest, etc) beer out there" just doesn't do it for me.

They add a ton of hops, but in order to have any semblance of balance there has to be a massive malt bill. In the end, most of them just get too sweet and heavy and eventually stray from what I enjoy about the style, which is the flavor of the specific hops used in that brew.

My wife's cousin brought it to the BBQ. He must have brought it from Wisconsin. He always has a bunch of different kinds of microbrew and he had been in Wisconsin trout fishing, so that would make sense.
