Big 12 approaches BYU and New Mexico
...or at least they did in 1994 when they were forming the Big12. BYU I get, New Mexico surprises me. If they were considering it once, what about twice?? (BYU, not New Mexico)
Texas A&M regents OK Big Eight membership (Des Moines Register 02/25/1994) "Another source told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram the Big Eight also has targeted for expansion Brigham Young and New Mexico of the Western Athletic Conference. Such additions would link 14 schools from nine contiguous states that stretch from Texas to Iowa and from Utah to Missouri. 'One step at a time,' cautioned Colorado Chancellor and Big Eight chairman James Corbridge, who is overseeing the addition the Texas schools. But, he said, 'In this environment, you can't wait around until everything falls into place.'"
Report: BYU talks to Big 8, SWC on move (The Commercial Appeal Memphis, TN 02/14/1994) "Brigham Young University officials have talked with the Southwest and Big 8 conferences about the possibility of leaving the Western Athletic Conference, according to a published report. BYU Vice President R. J. Snow told the Houston Chronicle his school had preliminary discussions with SWC and Big 8 officials. The discussions were sparked by the Southeastern Conference's defection from the College Football Association television package for a deal with CBS." Re: Big 12 approaches BYU and New Mexico
Notre Dame... stick with me here.
Notre Dame fills it's schedule with B1G and Pac-12 teams. The SEC just started the race for 14 or even 16 teams. How is Notre Dame going to fill out their schedule with their traditional rivalries in these super conferences? Notre Dame isn't going to join one of those confernces because they have already stated they only want a 12 team conference.
The Big 12 is the only major confernce that has less than 12 teams, allows them to keep their tv deal, and hooks them up with Texas.

I think Notre Dame will continue to be independent until NBC drops them....People think that'll will happen in 2015 or so when their deal is done but NBC will continue to re-sign them in some sort of fashion....Notre Dame is in the best possible situation right now, because unless the Big East is completely incompetent, they'll never have to join as full fledged member and just be a member in every other sport....

Thread title is misleading and should say "approached".

The last thing the conference needs is for Beebe to come out and say we've talked to x, y, and z about joining, when aTm hasn't even left. I would venture to guess there is a whole lot going on we know nothing about and will never know about.

Yep untill the Big East says get all the way in or get out Notre dame has no reason to look at leaving.
