Re: Monday Musings: Realignment Edition
Silly. You honestly think the big bucks in the B1G come from docs and lawyers??? How much do you think they make? The big bucks comes from business men. They are the only ones that find 20 million laying around for stadium upgrades, practice facilities, etc. Plus, many of these schools have won the casual fan. These people didn't even go to school but are fans and donate and buy tickets and merchandise. It adds up.

These people didn't even go to school but are fans and donate and buy tickets and merchandise. It adds up. I wasn't necessarily trying to prove causation (more money for the university) with association (doc's and lawyers) but just thought it was an interesting 'finding' one could say about the BIG. Yes, I do definitely agree that doc's/lawyers don't feed ALL the coffers for all those schools, and that businessmen and the like definitely are the majority of how schools make a lot of their money (See Pickens, Boone) BUT, schools like that in the BIG do definitely benefit from having that type of association. If nothing else, it's a way for the school to receive large amounts of grants from the Feds without having to pay it back.
Where I should've also taken my little comment at 1 A.M. was to associate what the BIG would be looking for when it/if it does ever expand to other schools; schools like a majority of the other players in the conference.
In addition, I guess I'm also concerned (but can't do anything about it of course) that ISU as the 'lil Ag' school" that nobody really seems to think much about, is getting forgotten in all this mess. But whoever said it in this thread, is absolutely right: we have a lot of people hopefully working for us (Pollard, Geoffroy) and that does help.
So what can I do about it? Nothing but sit back and watch, and hope we end up somewhere 'good' that allows us to keep our AAU association, our 45k+ football attendance at every game, and fans still packing Hilton to see us take on quality opponents in conference play.
All in all - I guess I was looking at the issue from maybe a diff standpoint - trying to figure out w/out going too much into financials, as to what 'types' of schools are associated with each conference and then figuring out where that puts us.

Re: Monday Musings: Realignment Edition
At the end of the day Mizzou/KU/KSU really want ISU to go with them to the BE. They want that for a lot of different reasons. Another school close to them for travel, built in rivals and frankly they will look like giant ***-holes if they all leave us in the dust. Let's not forget that's its college presidents that make the decision here. They tend to care about these types of things more than AD's. Take that with the fact that you know damn well if the superconference ball gets rolling that the BE WILL get raided by someone. The idea that if the Big 12 falls apart and superconference begin that somehow the BE will remain completely intact is crazy. The SEC or ACC will go after somebody in the BE. Maybe it's WVU..or whoever. ISU is going to be just fine..I understand the concern. I have a lot of concern but when you really stop and think about it we need to STOP reading these east coast news feeds. They don't really know what's going on. ISU will be tied with KU/KSU/Mizzou.

Random follow up: Indiana has 2 law schools and a Med School. Only one of the law schools is in Bloomington (the other law school & the med school are both on the Indianapolis campus shared with Purdue called "IUPUI").
Purdue doesn't have either, to my knowledge.

That said, University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not have a med school, does it? I thought that was at Omaha?
But you are correct in that Purdue- Lafayette does not have a law school or med school. They do, apparently, have an astronaut school, as their graduates seem to be disproportionately represented in that field...
EDIT: There is a med school at Lafayette. It belongs to Indiana University though. The whole is Indiana University-Purdue University system is confusing... I did my MBA at Indiana and, yes, it's confusing. Basically, the way I understood it is that IUPUI is a "campus" and not a school (though they do have sports teams - the Jaguars, geesh). You can't get a degree from IUPUI, if it's a business degree it's IU. If it's a engineering degree it's from Purdue. Some colleges, like the Med School, only exist on the IUPUI campus but are solely part of IU and vice versa. There is an IU law school on that campus (was formerly an independent Benjamin Harrison School of Law before being absorbed by the IU system) but also an IU law school in Bloomington. They are note the same school and don't share faculty, etc.
The Kelley School of Business (the big IU business school) is at both Bloomington and IUPUI (some shared faculty, shared administration). But the Indiana business schools at IU-Columbus and IU SouthEast (or something like that) are independent of the Kelley School but still IU business schools.
I doubt it's efficient, but I think that's pretty much what it is.
Oh and in my time in Indiana (04-09) most folks cared little about college sports (football or basketball). It was 80% Colts, 10% Pacers and 10% college sports (unscientific survey, of course)

How could you possibly know this? This is conjecture on your part based on your hope that ISU will not be left out.

The Univ. of Neby Medical Center is in Omaha. Just like the KU Medical Center is in Kansas City. Need bigger populations to be able to run a comprehensive teaching hospital.

Re: Monday Musings: Realignment Edition
Can someone shed some light on why K-State seems to be brought up more often on various discussion boards as one of the teams to be selected to go to a new conference ahead of ISU? I don't see how K-State could bring more to a conference then ISU, and if that conference is also taking KU, K-State has almost zero value. I also read a statement a few days ago where one of the KU administrators stated that KU and K-State are not required to be in the same conference, and the KU will do what is best for KU.

If I had to guess, KSU has done more on the field and on the court over the last 10 years than we have. Thus, the come ahead of us in the minds of the media.

If only we hadnt ****** away what we'd built in the early part of the decade. We'd still suck for TVs, but have much less of an image problem.

Re: Monday Musings: Realignment Edition
I love how our academics get less play when it comes to KSU vs ISU. There is not comparison yet in other sports, we are pretty even.

Iowa population (2010): 3,046,355
Kansas population (2010): 2,853,118
- You could probably add the KCMossuri side to K-State's TV sets. 459,787
So that gives K-state 3,312,905, slightly larger than ISU.
But, if KU is also in the same conference K-State bring very few new TVs, much like ISU would bring very few new TVs to the Big 10.

Re: Monday Musings: Realignment Edition
Just read Tramel's blog that Chris posted in his running blog. Big 12 football: Baylor ultimatum could backfire | Berry Tramel's Blog
I have to say, I totally disagree. His Okie homer colors are showing.
He is blaming Baylor for Oklahoma considering leaving. Does anyone think baylor would have played that card if they thought Oklahoma was actually serious about staying put?? Absolutely not.
The Big 12 is Baylor's last best chance.
