Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
When the Big 12 add teams,
We want to add teams that will bring us TV money,
and be good for the Big 12 and college football.
Adding teams in Texas and Oklahoma may be good for local rivalries, but they are not good for adding TV money.
After reviewing the list of Top 100 TV markets,
Top 100 Television Markets - Station Index
and looking for teams that may be interested in joining,
I noticed that Florida has some teams we should go after.
Universtiy of Southern Florida in the Tampa/St. Petersberg Area Top 13 TV Market
Florida International or Florida Atlantic near Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area Top 16 TV market
University of Central Florida near Orlando/Datona Beach area Top 19 TV market
Selecting three of these teams would create a new Florida core for the Big 12.
Each of these has a solid TV market, so the Big 12 gets great TV money.
Adding three would create local rivalries to help make College football better.
Adding University of Southern Florida hurts the Big East and may further their demise.
Adding teams in Florida would help the Big 12 with recruiting the great talent in this state.
It is also more likely to succede long term than just adding one team in Florida.
I believe a move like this could be good for College Football and the Big 12.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
It doesn't matter if it's a top TV market if nobody cares about the teams.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
No thank you to Central Florida coming in as long as George O'Leary is their head coach.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
While they have large amounts of tv sets in their areas, I believe their fan bases are fairly small. Seems to be common in the "vacation" areas. Too much competition. I would prefer closer schools for travel purposes. Money will come if we just stabilize and woke things out.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
Adding these teams would cost and arm and a leg for travel, especially for your Olympic Sports.
When adding teams, you have to look at the BIG picture, not just football.

This. Unless it's Florida schools like Florida St., Miami, or maybe South Florida I'll pass.

or maybe it hurts ISU state of Florida recruiting because it would give recruits 2 more local choices that will now be BCS level schools.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
I was thinking along these same lines, we need to go out and add teams from the biggest media markets we can find. But, I think you idea is taking too narrow of an approach. So I did a little research and discovered that the Imperial College London, King's College London, and London South Bank University all have american football teams that currently plays in the British Universities American Football League. I think they'd be perfect. Imagine all the really great trips for our fans to Europe and we lock down the London TV market and create a new international core for big12 football. I think this would be great for college football and for the Big12.

These are newer teams and have potential for a lot of growth.
I would rather like to add Miami or Florida State,
but currently that is not likely in my opinion.

We as an institution already have people recruiting these area's. Where we need to recruit is the Ohio/Penn region. Plenty of football talent out there. They just need to find out about ISU. If I were realigning, I would bring in BYU and then Louisville in the first go around. IF we were able to bring in 2 more teams, I'd take grab UFC and maybe New Mexico State for the California talent being recruited.

BYU would be a good one to get.
Louisville is a Top 50 TV market, which would not compare to any of the Florida
schools.
No decent California recruit cares about New Mexico football, even though I think
it would be fun to pummell them every year. Again no TV market.
Focus on the Florida Schools for their TV markets.
If we can get better Florida schools like Florida State or Miami,
that would be even better, but not likely to happen.
Re: Big 12 Expansion: Add 3 Florida Teams
When are people to grasp the concept that you want schools that bring enough to the table to earn their share and not dilute other teams' shares. Everybody is obsessed with adding schools in large TV markets, well guess what nobody is those cities where schools like New Mexico, Memphis, SMU and Tulsa give a rats *** about those programs.

Funny,
So I am guessing you want to add Northern Illinois or South Dakota State since they are so close to Ames.
You think flying to BYU, New Mexico, or San Diego State would be cheaper?
This would develop a new mini core of schools, like the three we have in Texas.

By getting lower quality schools, we don't pick up their TV markets. Especially in florida, a state with a large population of retirees who already have favorite teams and don't care to watch the local schools. All we get is what is leftover after the major florida schools' (the U and UF) fans and the retirees are removed from the equation, and that is slim pickings. We don't get better recruiting, if anything we lose recruiting to other big XII schools if we were to suddenly turn 3 florida schools into big XII schools. The only positive that I can see from this one is that we add a few more schools that we can beat on a regular basis to the mix, which is always a good thing for ISU.
