I think this is all about parading for a B1G invite.
Going to the Big 10 makes a ton of sense for Mizzou. Going to the SEC does not.
Like I said in another post...take away the last 5 years or so, and MU and ISU have similar football records since the 80's. Which are pretty mediocre. We have a lot in common. But we're not leaving because we think we're God's gift to college athletics (that would be Nebraska). We're not leaving because we think we can beat the SEC's best (that would be Ohio State). We're not leaving because Texas is a bully (they are...but that would be TAMU). We're not leaving because we demand national respect beyond our accomplishments (Iowa, maybe?)
What you see as a delusion or an inferiority complex is a resistance to a conference structure that is not sustainable. How hard is it to copy the systems that work elsewhere? How come no other conference is trying to emulate the Big 12?
I'll say it: Missouri is LUCKY to have an opportunity to join the SEC. Had the Big 12 members signed the rights deal LAST year, neither TAMU nor Mizzou would be leaving, and we'd all be in a very stable conference. Right up to the minute that Texas decides to join the Pac-12. Or the ACC. Or the Big 10.
Think it won't happen? How many of you thought MU would leave for the SEC, of all places? I didn't.
[QUOTE=Mizzoulander;2436395]Oh, COME ON! You judge a fanbase by its message board posters? What message board DOESN'T think it's OU or Texas?!
I think the anonymous Mizzou source leaking the interest in the B1G is almost certainly by design. A poor attempt by Mizzou to get the B1G to swoop in and lock up the almighty (in their minds) Missouri. The only thing, the SEC doesn't want to be second fiddle...it could certainly turn WVU into the SEC #14. Alienating your suitor doesn't seem to be a good move in this game of musical chairs....Larry Scott didn't like being used for leverage...you think Slive appreciates that???
I personally believe Mizzou started this whole thing by constantly (exagerration, I realize) begging to be picked up by the big 10.
I like Mizzou and have for a long while. I'm at an unusual spot because of how long this whole thing has been going. I'm fed up with BigXII schools creating more instability by either pretending to want out or just wanting out.
The best thing for the Big XII now, IMO, is to help Mizzou move out so we can get on with our business.
Nonetheless, I appreciate your posts...
THE BOTTOM LINE ON THE BIG TEN AND MIZZOU
The Big Ten doesn't want Missouri that badly. Certainly not enough to offer a better deal than Nebraska got.
Missouri doesn't want the big ten that badly. Certainly not enough to chase them and leverage them against the SEC.
Have there been discussions in the last few months? Yes. Are there SOME PEOPLE who would like the big ten if all things were equal? Yes. They aren't equal. Missouri isn't going to the big ten. Time to live with it. You don't have to like the idea of the sec but you're not going to the big ten.
It's not news that we wanted a B1G invite...in 2010. That ship sailed. Why is this a story now? Who knows? We're a leaky institution. Everybody knows that. But the folks charged with the decision know what they're doing. Everything points to SEC in the next several days.
I think Missouri should definitely go to the Big10 (along with us ).
