This sort of thinking seems to permeate amongst most ISU fans, and I am amazed with that line of thinking. On the surface, I completely understand the rationale, playing against Txas, OU, OSU, etc each year is tough. I get that.
But what I don't get is why everyone was clammoring that the Big 12 stay together and now add schools to make us strong again, but yet we don't want to play the "other" teams in the league. The good teams. Because as of right now, they will probably beat us. If that is the line of thinking that is universal, then we should join the MAC so we have a fair shot at winning titles on a regular basis.
Do you really think a good athlete from texas will consider Iowa State if he knows for a fact that only once in his career will he get to UT to play? Hell no, he wants to prove to Texas, and Ou, and whomever we are always scared of that THEY made a mistake in not recruiting him and he wants to kick their ***. This line of thinking on the part of the fans is exactly what keeps us from becoming a big time fan base, confident we have a shot in every game we play. Anything short of that, and we shouldn't be in the Big 12 anyway.
I say play Texas, Oklahoma, and all the others just as much as we can. It will make us better and who knows, despite all the pessimissim associated around this program, we might just win the league every now and then. I guaranty we have the right man in place to do that with CPR.
I am tired of hearing about our budget vs. some of the others. Overcome it. Paul din't take this job to finish 6th, at 6-6, and settle for the Terd Bowl year in and year out. He wants to compete at the highest level. For some of you younger fans out there, there once was a program called Kansas State that couldn't beat their way out of a wet bag. That was a win for everyone in the Big 8, plus a win for Morningside, Briar Cliff, and others as well. They got it done, and I will bet that Paul Rhoades is a far better catch than Bill Snyder in the long term.
Don't back away from the Big Boys. I say let 'em punch us in the mouth, and we get up time after time after time until we reach their level. I love the BIG 12. Bring it on.
