Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
Weis' deal, future at Kansas a bit clearer - Big 12 Blog - ESPN
Weis is being paid $12.5 million over five years, the same number reported shortly after Weis' introduction last week. The money is guaranteed, barring a termination for cause.
"It's going to be a quick stop. It's going to be five years. That's the quick stop. I'm going to be here for five years, because my wife and I had planned for me to be working at Florida for the next five years and then try to be put in a situation where we can walk away. … What we're going to do here is we're going to go try to turn this program into a perennial winning program and then try to have it where one of the guys on this coaching staff takes over."

Wow I can't believe he actually said that. How do you recruit after putting something like that out there?
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong. -

He does so much to instill confidence. With that attitude, how can he fail?

lol, I love it. We need one team we can count as a W in this conference.

Wow, sounds like a coach I would want to hire. Rule #24

Re: Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
Excellent. They'll spin their wheels for 5 years with a lame duck coach, and then they'll have someone have to try to take over again. I wonder who it is he is trying to get the head job when he's done. If he has this in place I'm sure he has a guy he knows he wants to groom for the position.
"Blamo"! The new CF approved swear word. -
Re: Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
actually this is a brilliant move. I mean, when do people have the highest motivation and do their best work? The last 5 years before their retirement of course! And the more someone is making the harder they are going to work, especially if that money is guaranteed whether they succeed or not. Just a great move right here.
read this post quickly - it might not last long -
Re: Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
So he is already talking about how he is looking forward to not having to coach at KU in 5 years? Should not be too hard to recruit against him.

Re: Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
Why in the **** would he say that!?

Re: Charlie Weis contract & interesting quote
He's had 4 jobs now in the last 4 years. I think he's trying to let everybody know this is his final job. It won't hurt this years or next years recruiting because they know he'll be there for their career but after that he may have to make a revised statement. He's had 2 - 5 star qb's already visit with him so I don't think it's hurting his recruiting . KU has never had a 5 star even listen to them in the history of their program.

Hard to demand and get commitment from players past the first couple years with essentially a lame-duck coach.

Hell... the guy had some of the best recruiting classes in the country at Notre Dame and still couldn't get them over the hump and got shitcanned. This will be no different. The Kansas program is in shambles, Lawrence is a difficult place to sell recruits on, oh... and they just happen to play in one of the toughest conferences in the country with a 9 game conference schedule. Do any of those things make Charlie think that this will be an easy turnaround? If Charlie has Kansas at 6-6 and in a bowl game by the end of year 4 it would be a miracle.

I guess he's planning on utilizing all those Kansas JUCOs in years 3-4. Who in his right mind is going to want to sign up with him next year and particularly the following years?
This whole KU situation strikes me as very odd on a number of fronts. KU clearly wants to be a player in football, but is this really the guy? I credit him for his honesty I suppose, but the PR impact just creates so much potential for negative recruiting.
I'm very interested to see how this plays out and what happens if they don't turn it around in a couple of years.
Cheers

Realistically all players (if they are smart) will look at five years. Even if they don't plan to redshirt, they need to look at it as a five year possibility. An injury can easily push even a player who plays his freshman year out to a fifth year. If Charlie is going to make this work, he needs to name his successor as soon as he gets his staff put together so it doesn't impact year 2 recruiting. If he isn't in on the ground floor with many of the recruits it is going to be hard to convince them to look at KU later.
"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr
