ESPN top 150 recruits

I was looking at David Ubben's article about the top 150 recruits evaluations that signed 4 years ago and was amazed at how many flame-outs there were.

There were 23 players on the list that signed with Big 12 teams. The only ones who did something noteworthy were Blaine Gabbert, Cyrus Gray, David Snow, Emmanuel Acho, Kendall Wright, and Landry Jones. Everyone else basically did nothing. That is 6 guys out of 23 that had a significant contribution. Amazing.

i think most of us are under the impression that "most of the time" top 150 recruits do better than the rest, but 6/23? Thats pretty weak.

It looks like ESPN 150 players have a much bigger impact at a less-big-time school ie: baylor, ISU, Kansas, k-state than texas/ou/SEC. They tend to get buried in the depth charts.

What a surprise that sitting on the bench behind other 5 star players at Texas, aTm, or Oklahoma won't get you anywhere.
I realize that the rating system is partially to blame, however a lot of these players would most likely have a significant impact at other schools.

Seems as much as an indictment on ESPN's ability to evaluate and rank players as it is a situation where so many athletes didn't reach their potential.

I really appreciate cyman05's follow-up research. I often wonder about what these predictions look like in retrospect. Any analysis like this is very welcome by me.

Look at ESPNs 150 compared to the others. They are way off. In basketball, I think they are fine but in football, they suck.

I'd be interested to know how much talent differential there really is between a 4-3-2 star recruit.

We all know Texas will have a top notch recruiting class, but how much difference is there between Texas and ISU?

And how much of football is player development? If you could take some of those guys from the ESPN top 150 from 2008 and transport them to CPR's program this year, how many of their fortunes would've turned out differently getting more playing time and attention than riding the bench at OU?

It'd be interesting to hear a coach's take on that if anybody wants to ask about talent differential at the recruiting party.

I wonder how the star distribution relates to regional attention to football. For instance, do high school kids in Alabama have a better likelihood of being rated with 4 stars than kids of the same caliber in Montana?

Star rankings are based on perceived potential of a player. There is no way to tell if a kid has developmentally peaked at 18 or if he will continue to grow not only as a player but physically. Some of the guys that get the high star rankings are physically peaked, they stand out because the are developmentally men playing against boys.

Also as a warning, there is a chance that a coach might laugh you out of the building if you ask about star ratings.

Interesting comment. I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense. Early bloomers might rate higher, but also peak early.

Kids get their star ratings based on the rivals camps they go to. They test the hell out of them and look at their film. I bet they aren't too biased on where the kid is from honstly. There just honestly aren't that many immediate talented players coming out of the north.

I wonder if there can be too many 5-star players on one team. In other words, too many cheifs and not enough Indians. A lot of 5 star or 4 star guys want to be THE guy, and if they aren't, they may tend to get a little standoff ish. They want the attention because they've always gotten it... Now suddenly they are a back up and just don't put the effort into it.

They would all be 2 or 3 star recruits. 4 star players on our roster were Darius Reynolds, Chris Young, and Anthony Young. Darius was one of our better players, but he was also the most inconsistent, Chris Young redshirted his first year, didn't play much this year, but he'll get some quality minutes next year, Anthony played a bit his first year, and was injured all of this year.

We haven't had a HS 4 star recruit stay all 4 years since Austin Flynn and Stevie Hicks.
