Can someone tell me how the KSU AD is this profitable???
businessofcollegesports...rtments-big-12/ This week, BusinessofCollegeSports.com is ranking the most profitable athletic departments. First up was the ACC. Next up is the Big 12. Over the course of today and tomorrow, we’ll also look at the Big Ten, Big East, Pac-12 and SEC. On Wednesday, the top-50 most profitable athletic departments will be ranked. The data was obtained from the Department of Education and is from 2010-11. While the data from the Department of Education is not perfect, it is the only data publicly available for both public and private institutions. Yet, neither Baylor nor Kansas churned the lowest amount of revenue in the Big 12 in 2010-11. Rather, Iowa State was the athletic department which produced the lowest amount of revenue in 2010-11, at $48,574,989.00.
While six Big 12 athletic departments saw profits in excess of one million dollars (Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech), two departments’ profits stand out. In particular, both Kansas State and Texas earned over twenty million dollars in profit in 2010-11. Kansas State achieved profits of $23,395,408.00, while Texas had profits of $24,317,815.00. Interestingly, though, is the fact that Kansas State’s revenues in that same year were $68,875,266.00, while Texas’ were $150,295,932.00. Texas’ expenditures, on the other hand, were nearly three-times that of Kansas State’s.

They took in $20,000,000 more than ISU and spent less. They do have a lot of well to do donors. Being good in FB and BB help them out a lot. Maybe they dont spend as much on their non revneue sports as ISU.

What have their revenues been historically? Did they have a big increase for some reason in 2010/11?

They only have 12 sports ISU has 16. That makes a huge difference expense wise.

have you followed the wheat futures market lately. it has done much better than corn futures.. in order for us poor iowa state boys to support iowa state we have to have high priced corn or we can't have any extra money to feed the iowa state athletic budget.
since the wheat farmers will making extra profit on their wheat crop, i imagine grandpa snyder and frank martin will have plenty of greebbacks to keep the ksu athletic budget primed with dollars. if you believe this i have a couple of acres of dry desert land i would like to sell to you...

Not sure, but they had an profit over $10 million in 2009-2010, so you'd think they could've spent more in 2010-2011 if they wanted to, unless there they don't budget every year.
I think they have two less sports total than we do, and they have Equestrian and Rowing as Women's sports rather than Gymnastics, Softball, or Soccer. I am assuming we spend more on those women's sports, but that wouldn't be even close to accounting for that profit.

How is their budget that much bigger than ISUs???

It is a waste of time to look at this report.
Each school records things differently. For example, KSU could have received donations in one year for a capital project that is not done until future years. ISU, Baylor, Kansas etc. probably have foundation accounts where they hold booster donations such as NCC and then transfer at the end of the year only what they need to show a breakeven or a small profit. The balance stays in reserves at the Foundation.
Major capital projects at ISU go through the Foundation and never hit the normal budget, while at Texas I have heard all the capital projects and gifts for the same go through the normal budget.

Usually they add this sport to help offset football numbers. I believe it has the largest number of scholarships of female sports. At least that is what they do at the university I work at.

The state of Kansas has oil in it. There are a lot of wealthy kstate alum and fans. There is a lot of business in Kansas City. There is more industry in Kansas than Iowa. The state also has a lot closer KU-KSU fan split that Iowa does for Iowa-ISU.
