Mack Brown Makes some good points on rule changes
Mack Brown not a fan of new rule changes - Big 12 Blog - ESPN
I tend to agree with the last sentence. Were do we draw the line..
Th new onside kick rule looks like it could be a disaster.. Players calling for a fair catch on a onside kick... -

They are fairly complicated, it's going to make the refs job a lot tougher in those situations.
They should just copy the new NFL rules.

That onside kick having to hit the ground twice is ridiculous. And fair catch on onsides? Good grief.

The onside kick rule sucks. We're actually good at that. It's our bread and butter.

I'm not sure if the "onsides" that Grant has kicked in the last few years would actually be considered onside kicks since player alignment was not changed. They dont even call them onsides when they are called in the huddle, they're pass kicks.
Technically, the teams could have called fair catch last year since the ball never even touches the ground. As far as touching the ground twice on your typical onside kick, thats not a big deal, normally the ball takes more than one bounce before it pops up. I'm not sure how they are going to regulate that though. Touch the ground twice as in the ball has travel end over end twice or just touch the ground twice?

Even if you call a fair catch, you still have to catch the ball... But my issue is if they see someone waive for a fair catch, that our guys could let up... there is just WAY too much grey area...

Might as well teach your kids to just keep going, at least at the end of the game. You are selling out at that point anyways, Another 15 yards isn't going to do any worse at that point.
I guess my biggest problem is them dictating these kind of rules on kick-offs. What's the point of having kick-offs at all anymore? The whole point was that it was a free kick, anyones ball once it went 10 yards.
Then the second big issue is giving the lackluster referees another judgement call to make. They caleld a phantom off sides on us last year, imagine if they are trying to determine weather or not the ball hit the ground twice.
My biggest concern though is the point he made about the End rushing and the QB stepping up and the end has to stop pursuing the QB? WTF is that? When does a guy with the ball get to make a move that prevents someone from being able to tackle him by rule? So teach every QB a 6 step drop then step up one and that negates defensive end play? BTW - in case you haven't noticed. I don't have a good grasp on all the rule changes this year.

It's getting to the point where they might as well put flags on and play flag football. A great sport is being ruined.

Re: Mack Brown Makes some good points on rule changes
I agree the kick off rule it terrible but I'm assuming if you muff the ball after calling for a fair catch the ball is up for grabs? Also, there is not much time to signal a fair catch on an onside kick. I'm guseeing recieving teams will start waving as the ball is being kicked.
Stay onsides my friends

I just dont see why teams wouldnt immediatly call for a fair catch when a onside is kicked...
