That's a little different than paying players to come to Manhattan. And in some ways, I'm actually with Martin on this one.

I dont know the rules specifically, but if this is wrong thats dumb. Id say this situation is more like your parents sending you money then it is a booster paying players.

Re: Frank Martin admits he paid former prep players
This is such an intellectually dishonest headline. He did not admit that he "paid" players. He said that there were numerous former players who had nowhere else to turn when they needed money, and that he was the guy they ultimately had to rely on.
This is not, in any way, "paying" players.

Hell, Iowa swimming coach Glenn Patton got in trouble for driving Marc Long (who is now the head coach) home the day Long's father died. He didn't want Long to be alone, and didn't want to make his mother come and get him.

If he broke the rules, he should be punished, but they should look at giving the players stipends.

Chalk up one more reason for me to like Frank Martin.

Re: Frank Martin admits he paid former prep players
I heard him say this in an interview (or maybe read it, I can't remember), but the reality is that some of these kids have nothing, and usually not even a father who is around. The controls that the NCAA has on them is probably too strict, though obviously even with current restrictions, the door is open to rampant abuse.

Re: Frank Martin admits he paid former prep players
Just the fact he was willing to do it here would have me sniffing around if I were the NCAA.
Just not a good thing to come out and say.

Good for him, this is probably one of the reasons why college athletes will eventually be paid a stipend.

They should have enough of a stipend to go to the movies and visit their family over a break.
