Re: Florida State Trustees want to explore Big 12
From the Wetzel article...
The first shock to the system hit Wednesday, when the ACC came to terms with ESPN on a 15-year, $3.6 billion agreement that sure sounded good in the press release. Each school was supposedly getting an additional $4 million a year. The average would be $17.1 million annually. Not bad, it seemed.
The reality was bad, however. The initial bump in television revenue is actually just over $1 million a year, sources said, and a total in the $12 million range next season. The deal is back loaded so the bigger money comes in escalator provisions that, considering how broadcast rights keep growing, probably will be below market by the time any sizeable gains are realized.
That additional $4 million per school, per year? That won't come until 2021, nine years in, sources said. Privately, almost everyone was troubled by the deal.
Furthermore, there was consternation over the length of the deal, which could favor ESPN. Some wondered if it wasn't agreed upon just to save face, the later money making it look like the ACC landed a windfall in today's dollar.

If the Big 12 takes 2-4 ACC teams and not Louisville, the ACC would be silly to not add Louisville. They're by the most valuable program out there right now not in the top 5 conferences.

Re: Florida State Trustees want to explore Big 12
So in reality, the money difference between big 12 and ACC is huge, even without accounting for tier 3 issues, ACC just hid it with an absurdly long and back-loaded contract.

What a crap deal that is for the entire ACC. Seriously, 12 million? Wasn't the Big East deal from last year even better than that?

That's why louisville was comfortable in telling the big east it shouldn't expect it around for long... it knows it either will have a spot in the new big 12, or will be able to fill a spot in the ACC after the big 12 raids it.

Four team playoff. Conference champions from the BIG/Big 12/SEC/PAC. Easy, right? I hated this when ISU and the Big 12 were going to be on the outside and I hate it now.
I love playoffs with 4, 8 or 16 teams, but i hate the idea of 4 conferences feeding four spots automatically. Keep the BCS formula for top 4 teams, add the one stipulation that at least 3 conferences must be represented so you don't end up with something silly where one conference has 3 teams in the playoff.

Which is why when Scott rolled out his NFL 2.0 dream of four mega conferences it made no sense that the #2 football conferences dies and the #5 or #6 becomes some important football conference. Reality has sunk in and we may still be headed for 4 big conferences but the ACC has no chance at being one of them.

Why is the Florida State president saying they are commited to ACC when everyone else is not? Damage control? Dude your contract sucks and ours is much better just come here already. Sorry but ummmm football is the cash cow not basketball.

Its just funny how the bot trustees comments and jumbo fishers comments are no where near the presidents comments.

I can't find the original quote on the WVU board, but i read this on shaggybevo:
From MHver3 at the UVW scout board: guy has been pretty spot on with this stuff it seems.
So With a beer or six in me thought I'd pull an eernation and drunk post the quasi-update I received tonight. Saw my main source in person for the first time in forever and all we talked about was realignment...ok not quite all but it was a lot. Neinas and Bowlsby burning the midnight oil on this one. Lots of discussions going on now. 10 schools have expressed their desire to look at B12 membership. Some are being cautious some are downright begging. One keeps calling like a crazy possessive girlfriend.
and added this tidbit on the ACC:
Oh yeah things aren't looking so bad for the ACC. They have had a lot of requests to apply lately.
Mostly Big East teams looking to not go down with the ship. And ECU.
We all laugh at ECU but they would immediately be the best football team in the ACC in North Carolina.

$12 million for next year? With the bump they'd give us, Florida State could literally double their TV money in one year by coming to the Big 12. They'd be stupid to not at least seriously consider.

FSU would be crazy to leave an extra 10-15 million on the table a year by staying in the ACC.
