Let teams (or conferences) earn their money by getting into good bowls. So, should basketball be the same way?

Even though we lost the game, the Pinstripe Bowl was a great experience for our program.

But his rationale for keeping the bowls seems to be that it gives more teams the chance to end their year with a win, not any of that. Why not have basketball "bowl games" for this same reason?

We aren't talking about some theoretical world. In the real world, we have a basketball tournament and football bowls. Both have enormous history and culture associated with them. I would hate to trade the football bowls for a football tournament.

I understand your preference, and I doubt that any football playoff ever grows large enough to supplant bowls altogether.

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
I liked the title until I read your post. I like the 4 big conference champions in regardless then the top 2 at large. Top 2 overall get a bye and the next 4 are at the better seed's home field (with the exception that if you won your conference you get home field that round as long as you have a record over .500.) NFL style playoffs. Then keep your bowls with everyone who didn't make the playoffs.
Or if you want to use all the bowls then make a 64 team bracket and use every damn bowl.
My teams: (as of 2/27/13) Cleveland Browns: 5-11 - .313 Cleveland Indians: 68-94 - .421 Cleveland Cavs: 19-38 - .333 Iowa State Cyclones (FB): 6-7 - .462 9/22/18 & 9/7/19 Akron and Iowa State CAN'T WAIT! -

yeah, there is nothing like a month long post season exhibition season which means absolutely nothing, and oh don't forget after the teams have had typically a 4-5 week layoff which makes for some really quality football games!
The Pinstripe bowl was a great experience? isn't that a little hyperbole? who will remember it in 2-3 years?

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
To everyone afraid of the bowls being destroyed... **** the bowls. They brought it on themselves when they basically forced the BCS into existence. They couldn't be trusted to wait a few weeks to get proper matchups, so it's their fault.
They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson. -

I fear that any playoff is likely to erode the bowl system. So far, the BCS system hasn't done so because it hasn't made teams play two games within the bowl system. Once we start going in that direction, I fear that we won't be able to go back. The BCS game may have already started us in this direction. It seems to have made us more ready for a 4 team playoff system.

How would you feel about multiple "tournaments", much like basketball has the NIT and the CBI? Would you rather see Iowa State play in the Insight Bowl or watch them have the chance to win a "3rd tier" 8-team playoff?

Hell, as far as i'm concerned, the current system is mostly fine as well, and has gotten it right 90% of the time. The only tweak i would make would be to do some sort of conference champion requirement, or that spots would first go to conference champions in the top 3\4 ranked teams, then at large, avoiding things like this year's matchup, but also making sure it doesnt get offered up to a team ranked much lower that doesnt deserve it either.

Bowls are as much a vacation as they are about the game. You get about 3-4 weeks to throw together a trip and get tickets, which you need for flights and such (its one of the downsides to basketball, it can get very expensive to make a last minute trip to a game)
