College Football playoff should be 6 teams
I wish it would only involve conference champions. While we are at it have college football form 6 superconferences of 16 teams. I would rather see inclusion rather than exclusion.
We could then essentially have an easy 24 team playoff by letting each conference play a conference semi-final and championship game. After you have the 6 conference winners seed them with the top two getting a bye.
This way there is no debate who the champion is because they will have won their conference and advanced. This way every team gets to compete for the national championship, but yet the more powerful conferences get keep a larger share of the money so they can be happy. Fans don't have to worry about favoritism in regards to selections or having to be a traditional power to get in.
Have a post-season final poll if you want, have bowls for those not involved in the final 6 if you want.
This would encourage teams also to schedule better non-conference games, especially if the leagues only use their conference records for who makes the 4 teams for their semi-final games. It would be nice to see conferences go to 10 conference games also.

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
So what about all the other Division 1 conferences? Why are they not included in the playoff?

They say that English surnames came from what you did with your life. I'm so glad my last name isn't Dickinson. -

Playoffs (of any kind) <<<<<<< Current bowl games

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
I think we can basically rule out the Sun Belt and some of the MAC or WAC.
96 would be more inclusive than the idea of 4 superconferences of 16 giving us 64.
let the leftovers form a new division and play in the spring, they could probably get more exposure then anyway.

I'm personally still in favor of the 16-team playoff. 11 conference champions and 5 at-larges, as proposed in Death to the BCS.
At-larges are the 5 HIGHEST rated BCS teams who did not win their conference, and there is no limit to how many a conference can have.
Seating is based off BCS rank
First round played at the higher seed's home
Second round either played at neutral bowl locations or high seeds home
Third round and championship game played at neutral location
Here what it would look like this year...
1 LSU (SEC champ, BCS #1)
16 L. Tech (WAC Champ)
8 K-State (at-large, BCS #8)
9 Wisconsin (Big 10 champ, BCS #9)
5 Oregon (Pac 12 champ, BCS #5)
12 S. Miss (C-USA Champ, BCS #21)
4 Stanford (at-large, BCS #4)
13 West Virginia (Big East Champ, BCS #23)
6 Arkansas (at-large, BCS #6)
11 TCU (Mountain West Champ, BCS #18)
3 Ok. State (Big 12 Champ, BCS #3)
14 N. Illinois (Mid American Champ)
7 Boise State (at-large, BCS #7)
10 Clemson (ACC Champ, BCS #14)
2 Bama (at-large, BCS #2)
15 Ark. State (Sun Belt Champ)

The money for this playoff would not be near as much than 6 conferences having 4 semi-final teams that play each other then the 6 conference champs meeting. There are about 25 teams or so that really don't belong in the same division with the others.

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
What if "scheduling better" means that those smaller schools can't have functioning athletic departments any more? Some of those schools heavily depend on those big-school games for their revenue.

This would be the point where state legislatures get involved.
The idea that "non-profit" entities are striving for ever-increasing amounts of cash for non-charitable work is going to present a problem in this process. No state is going to have their Arkansas State schools left behind so the bigger ones can make $.

Even if there were 6 teams, I still would exclude the ACC\BE most years.

Re: College Football playoff should be 6 teams
16 Team Playoff is what I would like to see. 11 team champions and 5 at large. They would be seeded by a committee with the first weekend of December being at home of higher seed, second week at home of higher seeds. The 12 teams eliminated would then be eligible for lower tier bowls. The final four would be at neutral sites (Rose, Fiesta, etc on January 1. The championship game would be a week later at a neutral site.

Ugh. This would destroy the bowls. For what? So the guys on ESPN can know who the national champion is. I much prefer having lots of big games with lots of good teams that get to end their seasons with a win. There is nothing like the college bowl system for giving fans a great time for a month at the end of the season. Soon, everyone will just be sharing money from one big TV fund. Let teams (or conferences) earn their money by getting into good bowls.

As long as a sponsor is willing to pay for it, and the schools are willing to go, the more teams that get to enjoy a trip somewhere the better.
