Re: Texas Tech considering 11 game schedule to avoid LHN
LOL at anyone who thinks having this game on the Longhorn Network doesn't benefit Texas.
And a bigger LOL to anyone who thinks Texas has no say in what is televised on their own TV network.
Thanks for the laughs tonight, boys. You're incredibly naive if you believe either of the above.

What I think is happening is, based on feedback from customers so far and other smaller companies that picked up LHN, the big guys are scared that there will be a net efflux of people if they were to pick up the network and they would move to the other guy or away from the big 2 all together. So it's an all or none thing for the big guys, and with the price they are asking and the lack of content it's not possible to justify. That's why they keep trying to cram other content on the channel to force the issue.
I would be surprised if it made it past this year, even UT fans are getting frustrated with it.

Actually, you should probably worry more about the LHN succeeding, and UT pulling further ahead of o$u in the money race...
The last thing your hawks need is to have the real power of the fox network decide that they are tired of sharing.

Texas is getting paid regardless. ESPN is the one worried about making its money back. And that is why they are controlling what goes on there and are desperate to get football televised. ESPN stands to lose hundreds of millions of dollars directly into UT's pocket.

Yes, UT gets paid regardless...
But do you honestly think that tosu, mich, etc aren't watching intently how the lhn goes, and how much of a cash cow it becomes?
UT was the first to get this opportunity, because the Big 12 splintered. They had the ego, and the national following to give this a shot.
There are a very few schools that could do this, three of them reside in the big whatever.
I love how all of the homers try to boast up delany's power, which he has plenty of. But if you don't think that he runs everything by osu, mich and psu, before he acts on anything, you are being naive.
osu has had more than anyone else up to this point. They knew that they could share equally with the rest of their conference, and still be the ultimate power.
This is a brand new entity, backed by the Disney's money. IF it succeeds, there will be others lining up to try their hands at it.

The dish carriers are putting up more of a fight than they were four years ago. The way that played out with the BTN and other network fights in the interim is now baked into the cake, (and the basic cable rate.) There is an upper limit to what people will pay for a basic sports tier. Everything cannot be on it.
Re: Texas Tech considering 11 game schedule to avoid LHN
Just remember that a conference deal that would bundle third tier rights would not be near as valuable as the Big Ten Network. The Big Ten Network also controls second tier rights. So, inventory would be somewhat limited.

Definitely true. People forget that the B10 network cash cow has two major things going for it that a potential B12 network couldn't have. (1) a much larger population and alumni base and (2) they basically split up their tier 2 games and said half will go to the B10 network and half will be included in the ABC/ESPN tier 1 deal. Thus, they have more inventory available for their network better quality games.
I think it'd make the most sense to create a B12 network with tier 3 rights and create unequal revenue sharing within that network.

And they'd be smart to. AS much as I don't like the B1G, I will admit, their Network is a viable sports channel. It covers a lot of states in big Markets. It covers enough schools that nationally, it's tough to go wrong by adding it to your sports package.
The LHN on the other hand, outside of Texas, there isn't going to be a large uproar to get it on the air. I could definitely see a lot of people moving to another option as opposed to having their rates go up for a channel they will never watch.
