Louisville to*join ACC, replacing Maryland as league's 14th member - Pete Thamel - SI.com
From Pete Thamel at SI.com:

A source with knowledge of the ACC's discussions said a big reason that the ACC moved so quickly to add Louisville was that the Big 12 also had interest in the Cardinals.

Louisville was always considered a logical candidate for the Big 12, as it would give West Virginia a geographic partner. The looming question is whether Big 12 presidents feel pressure to expand from 10 schools now that the Pac-12 (12), SEC (14), ACC (14), and Big Ten (14) are all significantly bigger.

This is the ACC's version of us adding TCU.
Like I said, the ACC failed big time by not adding U Conn.
Re: ***OFFICIAL BIG 12 EXPANSION THREAD 2.0***
Some quotes from the ESPN article:
Quote:
The ACC also considered UConn and Cincinnati for membership. However, sources told ESPN the league only wanted Louisville because there is a sense among league presidents that the ACC can add more schools at a later date if the ACC lost any other schools
Quote:
The addition of Louisville will not affect the ACC's new media rights deal. When the ACC added Notre Dame in all sports but football in September, sources told ESPN the ACC's media rights deal was expected to increase to about $18 million annually.
It should be abundantly obvious why the Big 12 is not adding Louisville.

Culture of the states is completely different. Kids raised in Texas are taught that Texas is the greatest state in the nation, and that nothing else can compete with it. It is unlike any other state in that regard. The hubris makes recruiting Texas very hard if you are not going to give them a chance to play in the "mother land". Florida and most other states will have kids that aren't taught to hate all other locales, and will be much more open to pulling up their stakes.

Also found this interesting from the ESPN article...

I'm all for the Big 12 getting Miami and Florida State. My dream scenario would be to add Clemson, Virginia Tech, Miami, Florida State, UConn and Notre Dame.

It's so sad those kids are lead to believe such rubbish.

Yeah, we screwed that up at the time. TCU was readily available, so we got them to plug the Hole that A&M left. We couldn't drop below 10 because it would nullify the TV contracts, and the conference may have fallen apart. So then when Mizzou left it took so long for all that to unfold because we had to get all our ducks in a row with WV, and they had to sue the Big East to get out immediately.
If we would have known Mizzou was gonna follow A&M, maybe we go after a tandem like WV and Louisville, but Mizzou was telling us they were committed, so we grabbed TCU since they were kind of in Limbo, and could get out of the Big East fairly easily.

This... Miami (barring bad sanctions) is on the verge of becoming a relevant team again, and combined with FSU the BigXII would have the entire Florida market minus Gainesville

Exactly. Louisville is probably a little better add than TCU, but we did what we had to do to keep our TV contracts alive, and in the end healthy.
